Reorientation Mechanisms of Graphene Coated Copper {001} Surfaces

Jian Song et al.

Summary: Engineering the surface orientation of fcc metals to the {111} plane can enhance their oxidation resistance. In this study, a reconstructed surface layer with the {111} orientation was observed on high-temperature deposited Gr/{001} Cu surface. A surface melting-solidification mechanism dominated by Gr/Cu interfacial energy and promoted by high-temperature surface melting was proposed to explain the surface reconstruction process. These findings suggest a possible strategy to enhance the surface properties of fcc metals through engineering surface crystallography.

Restructuring of emergent grain boundaries at free surfaces - An interplay between core stabilization and elastic stress generation

Xiaopu Zhang et al.

Summary: By using scanning tunneling microscopy and calculations, we investigated the structure of emergent grain boundaries at the surfaces of planar nanocrystalline copper films. We found that there is a strong energetic preference for boundary cores to lie along close-packed planes, which leads to the restructuring of emergent grain boundaries at free surfaces. This new universal mechanism of boundary relaxation at metal surfaces is expected to have an important impact on grain coalescence, film stress evolution, and the properties of nanoscale materials.

Uneven Oxidation and Surface Reconstructions on Stepped Cu(100) and Cu(110)

Meng Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the influence of defects on oxidation is crucial for the applications of nano-oxides in catalysis, electronics, and corrosion. This study investigates the uneven surface oxidation induced by surface steps on copper materials using atomic-scale in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy experiments. The results provide mechanistic explanations for the observed formation site preferences, which vary with surface orientation and oxygen concentration, based on Ehrlich-Schwobel barrier differences for oxygen diffusion on stepped surfaces.

Enhanced corrosion resistance by engineering crystallography on metals

X. X. Wei et al.

Summary: By engineering crystallographic configurations at the metal/film interface, the authors demonstrate an improvement in corrosion resistance of FeCr15Ni15 single crystal in sulphuric acid. This adjustment also decreases the passive current density and shifts the pitting potential. The transpassivation strategy is also effective in commercial stainless steels.

Synergistically enhanced interface stability by graphene assisted copper surface reconstruction

K. M. Yang et al.

Summary: Graphene/Copper composites hold great potential in thermal-management and information-transport applications. This study investigates the intrinsic relationship between microstructural characteristics and interface stability of different Gr/Cu interfaces. The results show that Gr/{10 0} Cu interfaces have higher defect sink capability, while Gr/{111}/{100} Cu interfaces possess both high defect sink capability and good interface stability.

Flat-surface-assisted and self-regulated oxidation resistance of Cu(111)

Su Jae Kim et al.

Summary: Oxidation can deteriorate the properties of copper, especially in the semiconductor industry and electro-optics applications. This study explores copper oxidation and proposes a strategy to prevent oxidation by using copper thin films with flat surfaces and occasional mono-atomic steps. The exceptional oxidation resistance of these ultraflat Cu surfaces is explained by the imperviousness of mono-atomic step edges to oxygen.

Formation of misfit dislocation arrays and helium nanochannels near copper surface assisted by high-temperature graphene deposition

K. M. Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, we propose an innovative strategy to generate semi-coherent homophase interfaces within the same grain by varying surface energy density using high-temperature graphene deposition. The resulting high-density misfit dislocation arrays can form stable helium nanochannels after helium implantation, providing efficient management of helium and surface protection of metals.

Experimental and theoretical studies on the surface morphology variation of a Ni substrate by graphene growth

Junro Takahashi et al.

Summary: As graphene grows on a metal substrate, step bunching and terrace formation occur due to thermodynamic instability. The interaction between graphene and metal causes variation in the terrace-step bunching morphology. Through the use of various microscopy methods and the 0-lattice theory, the mechanism of this morphological variation and the lattice matching evaluation have been elucidated.

Synthesis of large-area rhombohedral few-layer graphene by chemical vapor deposition on copper

Chamseddine Bouhafs et al.

Summary: The study successfully synthesized rhombohedral graphene with a thickness of up to 9 layers, with alternating crystal domains identified in Raman spectroscopy. Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses suggest that rhombohedral-stacking formation is correlated to underlying copper step-bunching.
