Atomic-scale observation of non-classical nucleation-mediated phase transformation in a titanium alloy

Xiaoqian Fu et al.

Summary: This study reveals a complete kinetic pathway of a non-classical nucleation-induced phase transformation in a technologically important titanium alloy, providing experimental evidence at sub-angstrom resolution. The presence of a metastable phase bridging two main phases is confirmed, with unique structural features and transformation mechanism identified. This non-classical phase evolution mechanism is expected to be more common than previously believed for solid-state transformations.

Atypical pathways for lamellar and twinning transformations in rapidly solidified TiAl alloy

Xinyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure formation and transformation mechanisms in rapidly solidified TiAl alloy. The results show that the alloy retains the alpha 2 phase and transforms into nanolamellar structures or equiaxed gamma microstructures depending on the temperature. The understanding gained from this research can enhance the tunability of the microstructure in additively manufactured TiAl alloy.

Mechanism of stress- and thermal-induced fct → hcp → fcc crystal structure change in a TiAl-based alloy compressed at elevated temperature

Daosheng Wen et al.

Summary: The mechanism of stress and thermal-induced crystal structure change in a TiAl-based alloy was investigated. Experimental results revealed the presence of twins and lamellae formation during phase transformations. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that the disordering of the crystal structure significantly affected the formation of lamellae.

Formation of lamellar microstructure in Ti-48Al-7Nb-2.5V-1Cr alloy

Yonghao Yu et al.

Summary: The reasonable design and application of phase transformation can efficiently coordinate the microstructure and properties of alloys. This study proposes a new mechanism for lamellar formation, where compositional transformation occurs prior to structural transformation under spinodal decomposition. The introduction of transitional lamellae provides evidence for the sequential process of spinodal decomposition, shear transformation, compositional modulation, and ordering.

Rapid decomposition of lamellar microstructure and enhanced hot workability of an as-cast triphase Ti-45Al-6Nb-1Mo alloy via one-step alpha-extrusion & annealing

H. Z. Niu et al.

Summary: This study proposed a new alpha-extrusion & annealing route to rapidly break down the coarse microstructure of a Nb-rich beta-solidifying gamma-TiAl alloy, enhancing its superplastic deformability. The one-step alpha-extrusion induced widespread decomposition and dynamic recrystallization of lamellar structures, resulting in a streamlined microstructure. Post-extrusion annealing further broke down residual structures and improved the content of globularized grains, leading to excellent superplasticity at high temperatures.

The investigation of microstructure evolution, deformation behavior and processing performance of the high niobium containing TiAl alloys

Mingao Li et al.

Summary: Phase transformation and crystal structure variety have significant effects on microstructure evolution and deformation behavior of high niobium containing TiAl alloys. The study of deformation mechanisms and processing maps of Ti-43Al-6Nb-1Mo-1Cr alloys indicates that recrystallization and a grain nucleation and growth can dominate deformation at different temperatures. Additionally, the dominance of dynamic recovery (DRV) of a phase is observed at high temperatures with low strain rates. The processing maps suggest a suitable dynamic recrystallization (DRX) processing region within specific temperature and strain rate ranges.

Grain fragmentation associated continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) of hexagonal structure during uniaxial isothermal compression: High-temperature a phase in TiAl alloys

Fengming Qiang et al.

Summary: This research thoroughly investigated the DRV and DRX mechanisms of high-temperature alpha phase in TiAl alloys, revealing a three-step process for the nucleation of recrystallized grains. The study provides original information on continuous DRX of hexagonal materials and develops an extended IGMA method that is beneficial for related investigations.

Thermally-induced α → β phase transformation interweaving with abnormal α grain growth in hot extruded TNM alloy

Fengming Qiang et al.

Summary: The microstructural and crystallographic features of the beta phase in TNM alloy during hot extrusion at 1290 degrees C and subsequent cooling process were investigated. It was found that there were two categories of beta particles in the extruded microstructure, one along grain boundaries of primarily recrystallized alpha grains and the other in grain interiors of abnormally grown alpha grains. The study revealed that the intergranular beta particles were derived from thermally-induced alpha -> beta phase transformation, while the intragranular beta particles resulted from intergranular beta precipitates after being swallowed by abnormally grown alpha grains.
