Fracture behavior of laser powder bed fusion fabricated Ti41Nb via in-situ alloying

Sheng Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructures and mechanical properties of in-situ alloyed Ti41Nb fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (LB-PBF). It was found that a small hatch spacing and fast scanning strategy could minimize porosity and unmelted Nb particle combination. The fabricated blocks had a mesostructure consisting of columnar grains and alternating Nb-poor regions (NPRs), along with extensive iso precipitates. The FCG rate was influenced by the NPR layers and the local slip systems, while the K IC exhibited significant anisotropy due to crack deflection by the NPR/matrix interfaces. Despite its low ductility, the mesostructure-induced toughening mechanism improved the fracture toughness of the alloy.

Unnotched fatigue of Inconel 718 produced by laser beam-powder bed fusion at 25 and 600°C

Jayaraj Radhakrishnan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructures, mechanical properties, and high cycle fatigue behavior of Inconel 718 alloy produced by laser beam powder bed fusion (LB-PBF) process at room temperature and 600 degrees C. The results showed that the fatigue strength at 600 degrees C was lower than that at room temperature due to the lower work hardening rate. However, dynamic recrystallization at the crack tip regions in specimens tested at 600 degrees C resulted in a higher fatigue life for stress amplitudes higher than the fatigue strength. The microstructural characteristics induced by LB-PBF were effective in resisting the growth of fatigue cracks at high temperatures.

Fracture toughness anisotropy of commercially pure titanium produced by laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing

M. Tarik Hasib et al.

Summary: The effects of build orientation and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) on the properties of CP-Ti manufactured using laser powder bed fusion were investigated. The results showed that HIP treatment improved the fracture toughness, with the X-Z orientation exhibiting the highest toughness values due to crystallographic texture.

Long-whisker type TiB phase introduced by micron-sized precursors and its prominent strengthening effect in titanium matrix composites

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: A new strategy was developed to obtain long whisker (LW) TiB phase with a high aspect ratio (~ 150) using micron-sized AlB2 in TiB/Ti(Al) composites. While three types of TiB phases were present in the composites, microhardness and compression results demonstrated that LW-type TiB significantly enhanced the yield strength of the materials.

A micropillar compression investigation into the plastic flow properties of additively manufactured alloys

Shi-Hao Li et al.

Summary: Solidification cells and a high density of dislocations play important roles in determining the plastic properties of additively manufactured alloys. It has been found that the high density of dislocations, arranged in a network or distributed uniformly, determines the yield strength of the alloys, while the variations in cell boundaries have no effect.

In-situ investigation of tensile behaviors of Ti-6Al alloy with extra low interstitial

Shixing Huang et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the tensile behaviors of Ti-6Al ELI alloy, revealing multiple slip activities dominated by prismatic and basal slips. Coordinated deformation mechanisms, including crystalline orientation rotation, slip transmission, and deformation twinning, were involved to accommodate increased macrostrain under tensile loading. Furthermore, microcrack formation was mainly attributed to localized stress concentration at grain boundaries in Ti-6Al ELI alloy.

Microstructure evolution mechanisms and strength improvement of (6.5 vol% TiC+3.3 vol% Ti5Si3)/Ti6Al4V composites via heat treatments

Xiaoyu Huang et al.

Summary: By increasing the sintering temperature, the aggregation of particles in the composite was reduced and the size of particles was increased. The Ti5Si3 particles dissolved into the matrix, while TiC particles prevented the growth of the matrix. After solution treatment and aging treatment, the mechanical properties of the composite were significantly improved without a noticeable decrease in ductility.

Effect of Si element on improving the oxidation resistance of hybrid (Ti5Si3 + TiC) particles reinforced Ti6Al4V matrix composites

Xiaoyu Huang et al.

Summary: The addition of Si element significantly improves the oxidation resistance of (Ti5Si3 + TiC)/Ti6Al4V composites by sealing the voids among TiO2 scale with SiO2, resulting in a densified oxide scale that bonds well with the substrate. The oxidation behaviors of the composites are hardly affected by TiC particles.
