Characterization of Gastrointestinal Hormone Dysfunction and Metabolic Pathophysiology in Experimental Spinal Cord Injury

Gregory E. Bigford et al.

Summary: Cardiometabolic disease is a common complication of spinal cord injury (SCI), but the underlying mechanisms are not well defined. This study suggests that SCI may disrupt the gastrointestinal system and contribute to dysregulation of energy metabolism, increasing the risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

A comparison of meal-related appetite, food reward and eating behaviour traits in people with and without spinal cord injury

Jordan M. Fenton et al.

Summary: Persons with spinal cord injury have a higher food reward for sweet foods and higher levels of cognitive restraint and satiety responsiveness compared to non-SCI individuals.

Construct validation of the Reasons Individuals Stop Eating Questionnaire (RISE-Q) and the development of the RISE-Q-15

Liam R. Chawner et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to validate the factor structure of the Reasons Individuals Stop Eating Questionnaire (RISE-Q) and explore its construct validity. The results supported the 5-factor structure of the RISE-Q and showed improved model fit with a new short form (RISE-Q-15) of the questionnaire. Construct validity was replicated for most RISE-Q subscales, but not for RISE-Q and BMI. Sensitivity to Internal Satiation Cues was associated with Physical Satisfaction (PS) on the RISE-Q, while Satiety Responsiveness was associated with Decreased Food Appeal (DFA) on the Adult Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (AEBQ). The RISE-Q-15 may be a more sensitive tool to study specific meal termination behaviors, and its low participant burden makes it useful for exploring multiple processes of satiation in various contexts.

The Diagnosis and Management of Cardiometabolic Risk and Cardiometabolic Syndrome after Spinal Cord Injury

Gary J. Farkas et al.

Summary: Individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) often have risk factors for cardiometabolic risk and cardiometabolic syndrome (CMS), increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. This narrative review focuses on recent research on the cardiometabolic sequelae of SCI, providing diagnosis and surveillance criteria, as well as lifestyle management strategies to improve cardiometabolic health.

Accentuated early postprandial satiety in people with spinal cord injury versus able-bodied controls

Jordan M. Fenton et al.

Summary: This study compared postprandial responses of appetite-related hormones, appetite perceptions and the sensitivity of appetite to covert preload energy manipulation in persons with SCI and able-bodied controls. The findings suggest that, following isocaloric preloads, postprandial satiety may be augmented, rather than attenuated, in people with SCI.

Development and validation of the Reasons Individuals Stop Eating Questionnaire (RISE-Q): A novel tool to characterize satiation

Paige M. Cunningham et al.

Summary: A questionnaire (RISE-Q) was developed to characterize reasons for meal termination with 47 influencing factors identified and separated into five distinct scales through factor analysis. Physical Satisfaction and Planned Amount were found to be the most frequently reported reasons for meal termination. The RISE-Q scales showed significant correlations with satiation-related scales, BMI, and measures of typical meal size, indicating potential clinical utility for targeted weight-management interventions.

Predicting Cardiometabolic Risk From Visceral Abdominal Adiposity in Persons With Chronic Spinal Cord Injury

Christopher M. Cirnigliaro et al.

Summary: Individuals with chronic SCI have higher visceral adipose tissue volume compared to able-bodied controls, and this volume is directly correlated with biomarkers of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism that are strong predictors of cardiometabolic disorders.

The Satiation Framework: Exploring processes that contribute to satiation

Paige M. Cunningham et al.

Summary: Satiation is not only influenced by biological and behavioral processes, but also related to the context of the meal; RISE-Q identified five factors contributing to meal termination; Satiation is defined as a series of dynamic processes in the Satiation Framework, illustrating the contribution of each factor to meal termination.
