Numerical investigation on a typical scramjet combustor using cavity floor H2 fuel injection strategy

Gautam Choubey et al.

Summary: The major issue in improving the efficiency of the scramjet engine is ensuring adequate hydrogen fuel distribution within the supersonic chamber. The cavity floor injection strategy is a promising approach to keeping the flame stable under a wide range of operational conditions. The simulation results indicate that as the free-stream Mach number rises, the circulations inside the cavity become more intense, resulting in the formation of a stable igniting zone inside the cavity. The effect of different cavity floor length injection on the performance of the combustor has also been explored, with the optimum cavity floor length found to be 45 mm.

Modelling of thin wall perforation limit in debris particles impact on space structures

N. N. Smirnov et al.

Summary: This paper presents the investigation on the interaction between high velocity space debris and thin metallic shields, which poses a significant safety issue for space flights in low Earth orbits. Formulas for determining the critical thickness of the target to prevent penetration, which depend on the mass, speed, and material properties of both the impactor and target, have been developed. The developed simplified models have been supported by the results of physical and numerical experiments.

Blowout characteristics of the partially premixed flame during the condition transition in a supersonic combustor

Dongpeng Jia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the blowout characteristics of partially premixed flame during the condition transition in a cavity-stabilized scramjet combustor using experimental methods. The results indicate that the dynamic process of flame blowout depends on the initial reactive flowfields, and the research on the flame blowout limits is significant for the design of the condition transition in a scramjet.

Combustion Modes and Unsteady Characteristics during the Condition Transition of a Scramjet Combustor

Dongpeng Jia et al.

Summary: During the transition process of a scramjet combustor, three typical modes of turbulent combustion were observed as the injection pressure drop gradually increased. Stable jet flame was achieved after the condition transition with relatively low injection pressure drop, while unstable combustion phenomenon with intermittent extinction and reignition was found near the blowout limits. As the injection pressure drop further increased, the flame was quickly blown out during the transition process, showing reduced flame area and light intensity over time.
