Hot-Electron-Induced Photochemical Properties of CdSe/ZnSe Core/Shell Quantum Dots under an Ambient Environment

Jiakuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the photochemical properties of CdSe/ZnSe core-shell quantum dots (QDs) under ambient conditions, showing opposite responses to oxygen and water compared to CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs. The ZnSe shells act as a barrier for electron transfer to surface-adsorbed oxygen but facilitate hot-electron transfer to oxygen. This efficient transfer process competes with relaxation of hot electrons, leading to complete quenching of photoluminescence (PL) and oxidation of surface anion sites. Water partially cancels the photochemical effects of oxygen, while alkylphosphines can stop and recover PL. ZnS outer shells slow down photochemical effects but cannot fully prevent PL quenching by oxygen.

Toward Surface Chemistry of Semiconductor Nanocrystals at an Atomic-Molecular Level

Hairui Lei et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the properties of colloidal semiconducting nanocrystals with a single-crystalline structure, which are largely influenced by their surface structure at the atomic-molecular level. Although there is a lack of understanding and control over the surface structure, the three spatial zones of the nanocrystal surface (crystal facets, inorganic-ligands interface, and ligands monolayer) can be studied using advanced experimental techniques and theoretical calculations. The surface ligands and their bonding modes are facet-specific, and the solubility of nanocrystal-ligands complexes is determined by the ligands monolayer. The molecular environment surrounding each nanocrystal plays a critical role in their properties.

Interface polarization in heterovalent core-shell nanocrystals

Byeong Guk Jeong et al.

Summary: This study presents an approach to control the potential profile of III-V-II-VI h-NCs by steering dipole densities at the interface, allowing for control of the optical and electrical characteristics of these heterostructured nanocrystals. The synthesis of h-NCs with atomic precision enables correlation of interfacial dipole moments with the crystals' photochemical stability and optoelectronic performance. Controlled synthesis of heterostructured III-V-II-VI nanocrystals demonstrates that dipole moments formed at the core-shell interface can tune the optoelectronic properties of these nanomaterials and their performance in light-emitting devices.

Water molecules bonded to the carboxylate groups at the inorganic-organic interface of an inorganic nanocrystal coated with alkanoate ligands

Jiongzhao Li et al.

Summary: High-quality colloidal nanocrystals can be synthesized in hydrocarbon solvents with alkanoates as the common organic ligand. Water molecules with a similar number of surface alkanoate ligands are found at the inorganic-organic interface for all types of colloidal nanocrystals studied. Carboxylate ligands are coordinated to the surface metal ions, and the first monolayer of water molecules bonds to the carboxylate groups of alkanoate ligands through hydrogen bonds. Additional monolayer(s) of water molecules can be adsorbed through hydrogen bonds to the first monolayer of water molecules. The water-enriched structure of the inorganic-organic interface of high-quality colloidal nanocrystals plays a crucial role in their synthesis, processing, and properties.

Synthesis of Weakly Confined, Cube-Shaped, and Monodisperse Cadmium Chalcogenide Nanocrystals with Unexpected Photophysical Properties

Xiaogang Peng et al.

Summary: Zinc-blende CdSe, CdS, and CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals with a structure-matched shape (cube-shaped, edge length <= 30 nm) were synthesized via a universal scheme. These nanocrystals demonstrated novel photoluminescence properties, such as near-unity single exciton and biexciton photoluminescence quantum yields, nonblinking photoluminescence of individual nanocrystals, and stable and narrow photoluminescence full width at half maximum at low temperatures.

Water Effects on Colloidal Semiconductor Nanocrystals: Correlation of Photophysics and Photochemistry

Zhuang Hu et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the responses of high-quality CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals to water and/or oxygen in an ambient environment. It was found that water molecules efficiently accumulated at the nanocrystal-ligand interface could photoreduce the nanocrystals, leading to various photophysical and photochemical phenomena. This research offers a unified basis for studying fundamental properties and designing processing techniques in industry.
