Capturing the swelling of solid-electrolyte interphase in lithium metal batteries

Zewen Zhang et al.

Summary: Characterizing liquid-solid interfaces remains challenging due to the limitations of existing tools. This study adopts a thin film vitrification method to preserve and study the structure and chemistry of key interfaces in batteries. The research reveals substantial swelling of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on lithium metal anodes in different electrolytes, with the swelling behavior correlated to battery performance.

Atom probe analysis of electrode materials for Li-ion batteries: challenges and ways forward

Se-Ho Kim et al.

Summary: The global development of electric vehicles and energy storage has sparked interest in battery technology, requiring detailed understanding of battery microstructure and chemistry for long-term, sustainable, and safe operation. Atom probe tomography (APT) with sub-nanometre resolution plays a key role in battery research, but faces challenges such as electric field-driven migration and sample preparation. Methods to shield from the electric field and address these challenges are discussed to enable accurate analysis of battery materials.

Poor Stability of Li2CO3 in the Solid Electrolyte Interphase of a Lithium-Metal Anode Revealed by Cryo-Electron Microscopy

Bing Han et al.

Summary: The stability of lithium-metal batteries is determined by the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Direct atomic imaging of the SEI using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy reveals that lithium carbonate is unstable in the SEI, leading to gas production when reacting with the electrolyte and a dynamically evolving SEI. Sulfur-containing additives preferentially generate Li2SO4 and other substances, limiting SEI thickening and enhancing battery life.

A Brief Review on Solid Electrolyte Interphase Composition Characterization Technology for Lithium Metal Batteries: Challenges and Perspectives

Xinyi Shan et al.

Summary: Lithium metal batteries (LMB) are considered as the most promising high-energy-density energy storage devices, but their commercial applications are hindered by poor cycling stability and safety concerns. Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) plays a dominant role in regulating Li deposition and overall performance of LMBs, but its composition and evolution are still elusive. Advanced characterization methods and monitoring techniques are urgently needed to address these issues. This perspective introduces the development history of SEI research, formation mechanisms, advanced technologies for SEI characterization and monitoring, and proposes future investigation directions.

Composition-Dependent Long-Term Stability of Mosaic Solid-Electrolyte Interface for Long-Life Lithium-Ion Battery

Vallabha Rao Rikka et al.

Summary: The solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) layer plays a crucial role in determining the fast charging capability and cycle life of lithium-ion batteries, especially during high-rate cycling. The composition and stability of the SEI layer are essential for preventing SEI breakdown and growth, ultimately extending the battery's cycle life. The density of the SEI layer increases during cycling due to the decomposition of entrapped electrolyte, leading to new possibilities for enhancing lithium-ion battery performance.
