Ultrafast Charge and Long Life of High-Voltage Cathodes for Dual-Ion Batteries via a Bifunctional Interphase Nanolayer on Graphite Particles

Kejia Zhang et al.

Summary: This work proposes an artificial cathode/electrolyte interphase (CEI) strategy by implanting polyphosphoric acid (PPA) nanofilms tightly on natural graphite (NG) particles, which significantly improves the performance of the graphite cathodes. The enhanced performance is mainly attributed to the PPA-based CEI, which effectively mitigates the electrolyte decomposition and protects the graphitic structure. Additionally, the hydrogen bonding interactions between PVDF binder and PPA, as well as the cross-linking effect of PPA, contribute to the improved mechanical stability and long life of the NG@PPA cathode.

A bifunctional fluorinated ether co-solvent for dendrite-free and long-term lithium metal batteries

Guangzhao Zhang et al.

Summary: The employment of localized high concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) has been demonstrated as an effective strategy for high-energy-density lithium metal batteries. However, the low ionic conductivity of LHCEs and their parasitic side reactions with lithium metal anodes hinder the cycling stability. In this study, a partially fluorinated ether of bis (2,2-difluoroethyl) ether (BDE) is proposed as a bifunctional co-solvent to form novel LHCEs for dendrite-free and long-term lithium metal batteries.

Nonflammable, localized high-concentration electrolyte towards a high-safety lithium metal battery

Chen Zhang et al.

Summary: The use of high-concentration electrolytes (HCEs) provides a promising way to stabilize the lithium metal anode, but their high viscosity and poor wettability hinder Li-ion diffusion kinetics. This study presents a new strategy using an ether-based, nonflammable localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE), which includes a fire-retardant diluent, to enhance safety and suppress dendrite formation in lithium metal batteries.

Nature of the Cathode-Electrolyte Interface in Highly Concentrated Electrolytes Used in Graphite Dual-Ion Batteries

Antonia Kotronia et al.

Summary: Dual-ion batteries (DIBs) operating at voltages beyond 4.7 V exhibit different performances based on the electrolyte used, with higher Coulombic efficiency and specific capacity achieved in HCEs with LiFSI and LiTFSI salts compared to those with LiPF6. XPS analysis reveals that LiFSI and LiTFSI electrolytes result in thinner surface layers on intercalated graphite electrodes compared to LiPF6, indicating a difference in interface formation and decomposition product buildup.

Locally Ordered Graphitized Carbon Cathodes for High-Capacity Dual-Ion Batteries

Kai Yang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a strategy to enhance the energy density of dual-ion batteries (DIBs) by using locally ordered graphitized carbon (LOGC) cathodes. Quantum mechanical modeling suggests that LOGC can provide additional capacitive anion storage sites, allowing DIBs to exhibit good performance under high currents.

Poor Stability of Li2CO3 in the Solid Electrolyte Interphase of a Lithium-Metal Anode Revealed by Cryo-Electron Microscopy

Bing Han et al.

Summary: The stability of lithium-metal batteries is determined by the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Direct atomic imaging of the SEI using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy reveals that lithium carbonate is unstable in the SEI, leading to gas production when reacting with the electrolyte and a dynamically evolving SEI. Sulfur-containing additives preferentially generate Li2SO4 and other substances, limiting SEI thickening and enhancing battery life.
