Imaging solid-electrolyte interphase dynamics using operando reflection interference microscopy

Guangxia Feng et al.

Summary: Reflection interference microscopy enables real-time imaging of the formation and evolution of the solid-electrolyte interphase in batteries, providing valuable insights into its structure and dynamics. The imaging reveals the stratified structure of the interphase, with an inner inorganic layer, an interfacial electrified double layer, and an outer organic-rich layer that is reversible with cycling. The thicknesses of the interphase subcomponents show an inverse correlation, indicating the influence of the inner layer on the formation of the outer layer and lithium nucleation.

Interfaces and Interphases in Batteries: How to Identify and Monitor Them Properly Using Surface Sensitive Characterization Techniques

Claire Villevieille

Summary: Interfaces, interphases, surfaces, and bulk are crucial elements in batteries, with bulk processes being easier to characterize compared to surface and interface processes. Challenges arise in studying surfaces, interfaces, and interphases due to nanoscale dimensions, inconsistent definitions of terms, and potential beam damage during investigation. Techniques addressing interfacial processes in batteries are reviewed, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages.

Correlative Electrochemical Microscopy for the Elucidation of the Local Ionic and Electronic Properties of the Solid Electrolyte Interphase in Li-Ion Batteries

Carla S. Santos et al.

Summary: The solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) provides a protective layer in lithium-ion batteries, preventing degradation of the electrolyte at the anode. This study used scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to quantitatively assess the local electronic and ionic properties of SEI in Li-ion batteries, and found that the formation conditions and electrolyte type have a significant impact on its conductivity.

Long-Term Stability of Redox Mediators in Carbonate Solvents

Felix M. Weber et al.

Summary: Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is a powerful tool in battery research, but its application in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) faces challenges in selecting a suitable redox mediator. This study evaluates the stability of 2,5-di-tert-butyl-1,4-dimethoxybenzene (DBDMB) and compares it with ferrocene as an alternative redox mediator. The results show that ferrocene exhibits superior performance in terms of degradation, making it essential for quantitative analysis of battery materials over extended periods.

Tracking Passivation and Cation Flux at Incipient Solid-Electrolyte Interphases on Multi-Layer Graphene using High Resolution Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

Yunxiong Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in Li+ batteries (LIBs) and compares them to SEIs formed on Na+ and K+ electrolytes. The researchers used scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to analyze the incipient SEIs in Li+, K+, and Na+ electrolytes on multi-layer graphene. The results show that Li+-SEI exhibits superior passivation and the highest cation flux compared to Na+ and K+-SEIs. Additionally, significant fluoride formation was observed in Li+ and Na+-SEIs.

Recent Progress in Understanding Solid Electrolyte Interphase on Lithium Metal Anodes

Haiping Wu et al.

Summary: The structure, properties, and influencing factors of SEI play a crucial role in the performance of lithium metal batteries. Efficient strategies for tailoring SEI involve understanding the composition, models, and properties of SEI, as well as the correlations between electrolyte components and SEI. Future directions include in-operando techniques, multi-modality approaches for SEI characterization, and artificial intelligence assisted understanding of SEI properties.
