Shear Thickening Behavior in Injectable Tetra-PEG Hydrogels Cross-Linked via Dynamic Thia-Michael Addition Bonds

Anne D. Crowell et al.

Summary: This study investigates the shear thickening behavior of PEG hydrogels through the manipulation of cross-linking bond exchange kinetics and dilute polymer concentrations. The properties of the hydrogels affect the onset and degree of shear thickening under continuous shear flow rheometry. The study also explores the injectability of the hydrogels and finds that injection forces increase with higher polymer concentrations and slower bond exchange kinetics.

Recent Advances in Hydrogels via Diels-Alder Crosslinking: Design and Applications

Sofia M. Morozova

Summary: The Diels-Alder (DA) reaction is a useful tool for synthesizing covalently crosslinked hydrogels due to its bioorthogonality, absence of by-products, and mild reaction conditions. These hydrogels have wide applications in materials science and biomedicine. This review discusses strategies and recent examples of obtaining hydrogels based on the DA reaction, highlighting their functional properties beyond self-healing. Classification of hydrogels based on the reaction type and components is presented, along with examples of their applications in cell culture, drug delivery, injectable gels, and wound dressings. Possible future directions are also explored, including temperature-controlled reversal of the DA reaction, nanoparticle modification, and new applications such as 3D printing inks and sensing hydrogels.

Effect of pH on the Properties of Hydrogels Cross-Linked via Dynamic Thia-Michael Addition Bonds

Thomas M. FitzSimons et al.

Summary: Hydrogels cross-linked with dynamic covalent bonds can exhibit time-dependent properties and have potential applications in biomaterials and self-healing networks. In this study, the relationship between cross-link exchange kinetics, material properties, and stability of these hydrogels under different pH values was investigated. The results showed that increasing pH led to faster stress relaxation, weaker mechanical properties, higher mass loss, and faster release of the encapsulated protein.
