Methane Oxidation over PdO: Towards a Better Understanding of the Influence of the Support Material

Kevin Keller et al.

Summary: The presence of water vapor during the oxidation of methane over PdO-based catalysts inhibits the reaction and deactivates the catalyst. This study investigates the role of different support materials at various water concentrations in the reaction gas mixture. Compared to PdO/Al2O3, SnO2 and ZrO2 show enhanced catalytic activity and stability in the presence of 12% H2O, with CH4 conversion dropping by only 68%. The interaction between Pd species and catalyst support is characterized through thermogravimetric analysis, temperature-programmed reduction experiments, and TEM measurements, and a kinetic scheme is derived from the experimental data.

Enhanced reactivity of methane combustion over Si-modified MgAl2O4 supported PdO catalysts

Fen Wang et al.

Summary: There is a strong demand for the design of high-performance methane combustion catalysts to reduce methane emissions. In this study, silicon-modified MgAl2O4 was used as a support for PdO, resulting in well-dispersed and ultrasmall-sized PdO nanoparticles (-2 nm). Catalytic tests showed that PdO/Si-MgAl2O4 exhibited higher catalytic activity (T-90 = 318 degrees C) compared to unmodified MgAl2O4 supported PdO catalyst (T-90 = 368 degrees C) at GHSV of 30,000 mL/(g-h).

Excellent stability for catalytic oxidation of methane over core-shell Pd@silicalite-1 with complete zeolite shell in wet conditions

Xiaoqing Feng et al.

Summary: Supported palladium catalysts have shown promise for the combustion/oxidation of unburned methane. In this study, core-shell Pd@silicalite-1 catalysts were synthesized and CO-FTIR method was used to probe the completeness of the zeolite shell. The Pd@S-x (x = 1.5, 2.0) catalysts exhibited excellent stability in practical wet conditions.

Combined silicon carbide and zirconia open cell foams for the process intensification of catalytic methane combustion in lean conditions: Impact on heat and mass transfer

Carmen W. Moncada Quintero et al.

Summary: In this study, a combination of silicon carbide and zirconia open cell foams coated with PdO/Co3O4 catalyst were tested for methane oxidation, with the best results achieved when the two supports were used in series with different thermal conductivities. Mass transfer effects, external and internal heat transfer effects were evaluated, and comparisons were made in terms of volumetric heat transfer coefficient and heats of removal/reaction.

High-surface-area mesoporous silica-yttria-zirconia ceramic materials prepared by coprecipitation method - the role of silicon

Yang Wu et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed high-surface-area yttria-zirconia materials through silicon modification, and investigated the distribution and role of silicon in the materials. The presence of silicon species, mainly in the form of silicates, hindered the migration of Y and Zr atoms, resulting in smaller crystallite size.

Progress and key challenges in catalytic combustion of lean methane

Xiangbo Feng et al.

Summary: Methane, as a primary type of clean energy, is the second most important greenhouse gas after CO2. Large quantities of lean methane are emitted into the atmosphere during coal mine, oil, and natural gas production, leading to energy loss and greenhouse effect. Utilizing lean methane is challenging, but catalytic combustion is a vital pathway to reduce emissions. This review discusses the development, challenges, and prospects of catalytic lean methane combustion technology, with a focus on heat management from the perspective of material design and reactor configuration.

Recent progress of catalytic methane combustion over transition metal oxide catalysts

Yuan Gao et al.

Summary: Methane plays an important role in carbon neutrality but its increasing atmospheric concentration poses a threat to global temperature. Catalytic methane combustion is an effective strategy to address this issue, with transition metal oxide catalysts attracting attention as alternatives to noble-metal-based catalysts. This review summarizes the recent research advances in transition metal oxide-based catalytic methane combustion reactions, including the reaction mechanisms and properties of these catalysts.

Methane oxidation activity and nanoscale characterization of Pd/CeO2 catalysts prepared by dry milling Pd acetate and ceria

Maila Danielis et al.

Summary: The milling of Palladium acetate and CeO2 under dry conditions results in robust and environmentally friendly catalysts with excellent methane oxidation activity. The characterization techniques used in this study identified the presence of Pd-0/Pd2+ species with different degrees of interaction with ceria (Ce3+/Ce4+), which are believed to be responsible for the enhanced catalytic activity. This study provides insight into the mechanistic understanding of the catalytic performance of Pd/CeO2 catalysts prepared by dry milling.

Effect of support on Pd-catalyzed methane-lean combustion in the presence of water: Review

Roshni Sajiv Kumar et al.

Summary: This review discusses the challenges in developing small footprint catalytic converters for lean-burn natural gas vehicles, focusing on the impact of support materials on Pd catalyst tolerance to water. Factors such as support hydrophobicity, its ability to bind hydroxyls, and oxygen mobility play crucial roles in improving catalyst stability and activity. Recommendations for specific catalyst testing and characterization techniques are also provided.

Stable Palladium Oxide Clusters Encapsulated in Silicalite-1 for Complete Methane Oxidation

Teng Li et al.

Summary: The use of an amine-based ligand during zeolite synthesis enables the encapsulation of highly dispersed palladium oxide clusters within the microporous channels and voids of nanosized silicalite-1 crystals. This encapsulation effect, combined with the properties of silicalite-1, results in the optimized Pd@silicalite-1 catalyst outperforming traditional Pd-based catalysts in lean methane oxidation reaction in terms of both high activity and better stability.

Construction of a Pd(PdO)/Co3O4@SiO2 core-shell structure for efficient low-temperature methane combustion

Yongde Ma et al.

Summary: The study introduces a Pd(PdO)/Co3O4@SiO2 bimetallic oxide core-shell catalyst with improved catalytic activity in methane combustion, attributed to the enhanced metal interaction between Pd and Co in the core-shell structure. The weakening of the Co-O bond in the catalyst promotes the release of lattice oxygen species to enhance the catalytic performance at low temperatures.

Engineering multicomponent metal-oxide units for efficient methane combustion over palladium-based catalysts

Yelin Chen et al.

Summary: The study presents a strategy for enhancing the efficiency and stability of methane combustion by engineering metal oxide units through incorporating Mg into Pd/CexZr1-xO2-Al2O3 catalysts. The addition of Mg modifies the surface and structural properties of the catalyst, leading to the generation of oxygen vacancies and improved oxygen migration. This results in weaker Pd-O bonds, enhanced reducibility, and smoother conversion between Pd and PdO, ultimately benefiting methane oxidation.
