High Performance and Durable Anode with 10-Fold Reduction of Iridium Loading for Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

Jorge Torrero et al.

Summary: In this study, an anode with reduced iridium loading (0.2 mg) compared to commercial proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) (2-3 mg) was developed, demonstrating high performance and stability for over 1000 hours. An advanced catalyst based on an Ir mixed oxide (Sr2CaIrO6) was used, which has an unconventional structure that contributes to the reduction of iridium in the catalyst layer. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed the reconfiguration of the ionomer in the catalyst layer, resulting in almost full coverage of the catalytic layer with ionomers.

Highly reversible Mg metal anodes enabled by interfacial liquid metal engineering for high-energy Mg-S batteries

Chuanliang Wei et al.

Summary: Metallic Mg is a promising anode material for rechargeable magnesium-ion batteries, but low Mg2+ conductivity caused by liquid electrolyte passivation hinders its development. This study found that Mg dendrites can be formed in Mg metal anodes, and these nanoscale dendrites can pierce through separators and cause short circuits. By painting a liquid metal Ga layer on Mg foil, the issues of Mg metal anodes can be addressed and a high-performance Mg metal anode can be obtained.

Summary: This study confirms that the voltage hysteresis in magnesium-sulfur batteries is a result of magnesium passivation, and reveals the continuous competition relationship between the formation and destruction of the passive film during magnesium stripping, which is mainly influenced by the current density on magnesium anode and the concentration of anions causing passivation. Additionally, the electrolyte additive bromide ions can effectively suppress magnesium passivation and voltage hysteresis, providing valuable insights for further regulating the passivation behavior of magnesium anodes.

Al2O3 Thin Films on Magnesium: Assessing the Impact of an Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interphase

Emily Sahadeo et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the properties of Al2O3 thin films deposited using atomic layer deposition as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase at the Mg anode. Results show that Al2O3 prevents electrolyte degradation due to the reductive nature of Mg, but undesirable properties such as defects and layer breakdown lead to soft-shorting issues. The study suggests that Al2O3 is not ideal for use as a protective layer, as it cannot prevent soft-shorting and instead hinders Mg growth.
