Directed Dehydration of Na4Sn2S6 • 5H2O Generates the New Compound Na4Sn2S6: Crystal Structure and Selected Properties

Assma Benkada et al.

Summary: A new thiostannate Na4Sn2S6 was successfully synthesized by removing crystal water from the hydrate Na4Sn2S6 center dot 5H(2)O at moderate temperatures. In contrast to the isolated [Sn2S6](4-) anions in the hydrate structure, the anhydrate contains linear chains composed of corner-sharing SnS4 tetrahedra, which is a unique structural motif in thiostannate chemistry. The structural rearrangement involves bond-breakage in the [Sn2S6](4-) anion, movement of the fragments, and formation of Sn-S-Sn bonds. The coordination environment of Na+ cations is also significantly altered, forming a six-membered ring through corner- and edge-sharing of in situ formed NaS5 polyhedra. Time-dependent in situ X-ray powder diffraction results showed fast rehydration into Na4Sn2S6 center dot 5H(2)O during storage in air, but the recovery of initial crystallinity requires several days. Impedance spectroscopy revealed moderate room-temperature Na+ ion conductivity of 0.31 μS cm(-1) and an activation energy for ionic transport of E-a=0.75 eV.

In situ growth of UiO-66-NH2 in wood-derived cellulose for iodine adsorption

Shenglong Tian et al.

Summary: In this study, a hierarchically porous UiO-66-NH2 @WCA composite was synthesized by in-situ synthesis of UiO-66-NH2 in wood-derived cellulose aerogel (WCA). The composite exhibited high adsorption capacity for iodine vapor and iodine aqueous solution, and the adsorption behavior in iodine aqueous solution was well predicted by the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity was highest at pH 6, and the ionic strength had little effect. The hydroxyl groups on the WCA matrix provided additional sites for iodine capture. The composite also showed excellent recyclability and potential for practical application.

pH-Triggered Release and Degradation Mechanism of Layered Double Hydroxides with High Loading Capacity

Lei Li et al.

Summary: The loading capacity and release behavior of LDHs were investigated in this study. Different sizes and types of LDHs were synthesized and their loading capacities were compared. It was found that NO3- interlayer anions and larger interlayer distance contributed to the high loading capacities of MgAl-NO3 LDHs. The pH-dependent release behaviors of MO-loaded MgAl-NO3 LDHs were also studied. The findings suggest that LDHs can be effectively used as drug carriers in biomedical applications.

Yi Ding et al.

Summary: Exploring efficient iodine gas adsorbent is a meaningful and challenging topic. In this study, Bi-0 modified SiO2 materials with different morphologies were fabricated and their iodine gas adsorption behaviors were investigated. The results showed that platelet-like Bi-0 modified SiO2 had the highest total adsorption capacity, while sphere-like Bi-0 modified SiO2 had the highest ratio of stable form of adsorption. Temperature had an effect on the adsorption behavior, and the adsorption processes followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation.

Dingyang Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel electrospun fiber adsorbents with high efficiency for capturing iodine species. The adsorbents can effectively remove iodine from both saturated iodine solution and iodide solution. The high iodine uptake capacity is attributed to the multiple active sites on the adsorbents, which exhibit high binding affinity towards iodine species through physical and chemical adsorption. Additionally, the adsorbents can be used as an adsorption column for dynamic iodine capture due to their macroscopic architecture.
