Raman Mapping as a Tool for Evaluating I2 and I3- Diffusion Over Single-Crystal UiO-67_NH2(M) (M = Zr, Zr/Hf, or Hf)

Pedro H. M. Andrade et al.

Summary: The UiO family of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials is considered as one of the best choices for capturing gaseous iodine in nuclear power energy due to its properties like high specific surface areas, great iodine adsorption capacity, and good stability under nuclear accidents conditions. In this study, three UiO-67_NH2 samples with different metal contents were used to capture iodine, and Raman spectroscopy mappings were used to evaluate the different species. The results showed that UiO-67_NH2(Hf) compound had the best adsorption capacity, capturing 3428 g center dot mol(-1) of iodine, while UiO-67_NH2(Zr/Hf) and UiO-67_NH2(Zr) samples adsorbed 2835 g center dot mol(-1) and 1658 g center dot mol(-1) respectively. The spatial distribution of I-2 and I-3(-) along the crystals of UiO67_NH2 materials was correlated with the diffusion process of both species, improving the understanding of the mechanism responsible for iodine conversion and stabilization in UiO materials.

Capture of Gaseous Iodine in Isoreticular Zirconium-Based UiO-n Metal-Organic Frameworks: Influence of Amino Functionalization, DFT Calculations, Raman and EPR Spectroscopic Investigation

Maeva Leloire et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of amino-functionalization on Zr-based UiO-n MOF materials for iodine capture. Experimental results demonstrate the preferential interaction between amino functional groups and iodine, which is also supported by DFT calculations. UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopy analysis reveals the encapsulation of iodine within the pore system of UiO-n materials and their amino-derivatives. Moreover, molecular iodine (I-2) species are converted into anionic iodine complexes within the MOF cavities when exposed to ambient light.

Iodine Uptake by Zr-/Hf-Based UiO-66 Materials: The Influence of Metal Substitution on Iodine Evolution

Pedro H. M. Andrade et al.

Summary: This study reports the transformation of iodine encased in metal-organic frameworks and the influence of Hf on the structure and physical properties of UiO-66. The presence of Hf reduces the band gap of UiO-66 and leads to changes in certain physical properties. The study also confirms the advantage of Hf in capturing iodine and proposes a mechanism for the conversion of I2 into I3-.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with various functionalities and porous structures are suitable for a wide range of applications. Vibrational spectroscopy (IR and Raman) plays a crucial role in characterizing MOF materials and studying their interaction with gases, highlighting both advantages and limitations of the technique. By combining IR and Raman spectroscopies with other techniques, the structure, properties, and reactivity of MOFs can be explicitly established.

A Flexible and Porous Ferrocene-Based Gallium MOF with MIL-53 Architecture

Jannik Benecke et al.

Summary: A new gallium-based metal-organic framework, Ga-MIL-53-FcDC, was synthesized using a ferrocene-containing linker molecule. The compound showed porosity with a specific surface area of 270 m(2)/g, and the presence of the ferrocene complex was confirmed through various spectroscopic methods. The structural flexibility of Ga-MIL-53-FcDC depends on the guest molecules in its pores, and the flexibility can be attributed to the torsion of the GaO6 octahedra and the carboxylate groups relative to each other.

Metal-Organic Frameworks: Molecules or Semiconductors in Photocatalysis?

Nikita Kolobov et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer unique possibilities for tailored physical properties in the realm of solids due to their modular, molecular make-up. Although MOFs show adaptable properties for photocatalysis, they are positioned between semiconductor physics and homogeneous photocatalysis in some areas. The gap between theory and experiment in certain areas suggests a need for further exploration and refinement.

Degradation of diclofenac in water under LED irradiation using combined g-C3N4/NH2-MIL-125 photocatalysts

V. Muelas-Ramos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the photocatalytic degradation of diclofenac using hybrid materials composed of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and titanium-metal organic framework (NH2-MIL-125) in various mass proportions. The hybrid materials exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than the individual components, with a 50:50 MOF:g-C3N4 ratio yielding the highest conversion rate, completely eliminating diclofenac in 2 hours. Identification of by-products species allowed for proposing a degradation pathway under the experimental conditions.
