Surface Hydrophobicity Engineering of Pt-Based Noble Metal Aerogels by Ionic Liquids toward Enhanced Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction

Hongxing Yuan et al.

Summary: Modulating the surface hydrophobicity of noble metal aerogels with ionic liquids (ILs) can significantly enhance their oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. The relationship between surface hydrophobicity and ORR activity was investigated, and a suitable hydrophobic surface constructed by ILs was found to be most favorable for ORR. The PtPd aerogel modified by ILs showed an inspiring ORR activity, outperforming the commercial Pt/C in terms of half-wave potential and mass activity.

Mingchuan Luo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the unexpected effect of non-specifically adsorbed anions on the kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on a Pt electrode, which is different from the usual ORR descriptor. A voltammetry-accessible descriptor is proposed to track the dependence of ORR rates on electrolytes, and a model is proposed to explain the different trends of ORR rates under different conditions.

Rational construction of thermally stable single atom catalysts: From atomic structure to practical applications

Hongwei Lv et al.

Summary: As a new frontier in the field of catalysis, single-atom catalysts (SACs) with unique electronic structure and high atom utilization have shown unprecedented activity and selectivity in a wide range of catalytic reactions. However, many SACs reported so far are susceptible to sintering and deactivation due to weak interaction between the metal atom and supports, especially in high temperature environment or long-term catalytic application. Therefore, it is crucial to develop SACs with excellent thermal stability to meet the industrial demands.

Enhancing oxygen reduction electrocatalysis by tuning interfacial hydrogen bonds

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: The proton activity at the electrified interface plays a crucial role in the kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer reactions. By using a library of protic ionic liquids on platinum and gold interfaces, researchers have successfully enhanced the oxygen reduction reaction activity by up to fivefold, showing a volcano-shaped dependence on the pK(a) of the ionic liquid. This enhancement is attributed to strengthened hydrogen bonds between ORR products and ionic liquids with similar pK(a)s, leading to favorable PCET kinetics.
