Overlooked Spherical Nanoparticles Exist in Plant Extracts: From Mechanism to Therapeutic Applications

Jingmin Fan et al.

Summary: Plant medicine research has mostly focused on the chemical compositions and medicinal effects of plant extracts, neglecting the knowledge about nanoparticles in these extracts. This study discovered spherical nanoparticles in some plant extracts, specifically in Turkish galls extracts, and examined their pH responsiveness, free radical scavenging, and antibacterial capabilities. The study also developed a general platform for producing spherical nanoparticles using Turkish gall extracts and functional proteins, demonstrating the retention of original protein or catechol properties in the nanoparticles. This work introduces a new member of the plant-derived edible nanoparticle (PDEN) family and establishes a simple and versatile platform for mass production of nanoparticles.

Insight into the self-assembly behavior of α-zein by multi-spectroscopic and molecular simulations: An example of combination with the main component of jujube peel pigments - Rutin

Jinpeng Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, the binding mechanism in zein/rutin complexes was systematically studied using multi-spectroscopic methods and molecular simulations. Results showed that the encapsulation efficiency of complexes reached a maximum of 67.30% when the concentration of rutin was 60 μM. Microstructure characterization revealed a spherical morphology of the complexes. Multi-spectroscopic experiments indicated the occurrence of static quenching and strong affinity in the interaction process. Molecular dynamics simulation further confirmed hydrophobic interaction as the main force in zein/rutin complexes. This work is important for the utilization of zein for the delivery of bio-compounds.

Effects of the structure and interaction force of phytosterol/whey protein isolate self-assembly complex on phytosterol digestion properties

Tian Zhao et al.

Summary: A PS/WPI self-assembly complex was formed with different mass ratios to investigate the interaction mechanism, WPI secondary structure, and PS digestion properties. The study found that an increase in PS ratio led to an increase in beta-sheet content, which inhibited the release rate and bioaccessibility of PS. The presence of hydrogen bonds in the complex positively correlated with the beta-turn of WPI, playing a significant role in enhancing encapsulation efficiency, promoting PS release, and improving bioaccessibility.

Endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition: New insights into vascular calcification

Dingkun Lu et al.

Summary: With the continuous progress of atherosclerosis research, vascular calcification has gained increasing attention as a significant pathological change. Numerous studies have shown that it is an independent predictor of death risk of cardiovascular disease and has a strong correlation with poor clinical prognosis. As the world's population continues to age, the occurrence of vascular calcification is expected to reach its highest point in the near future. Therefore, it is essential to investigate ways to prevent or even reverse this process for clinical purposes.

Suppression of PFKFB3-driven glycolysis restrains endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition and fibrotic response

Hao Zeng et al.

Summary: Endothelial cells can undergo endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndoMT) in cardiac fibrosis, and this process is driven by abnormal glycolysis mediated by 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-biphosphatase 3 (PFKFB3). Pharmacological intervention of PFKFB3 with salvianolic acid C (SAC) can attenuate EndoMT and fibrotic response.
