Expanding Linker Dimensionality in Metal-organic Frameworks for sub-Ångstrom Pore Control for Separation Applications

Lauren K. K. Macreadie et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are gaining rapid attention due to their high surface areas and ability to selectively separate component mixtures. Recent research on 3D-linker MOFs has shown outstanding capabilities for gas and hydrocarbon adsorption and separation. Widespread adoption of 3D-linkers in MOF synthesis is forecasted in the future.

Spatiotemporal Design of the Metal-Organic Framework DUT-8(M)

Hiroki Miura et al.

Summary: Switchable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have applications in selective separation, pressure amplification, sensing, and actuation. This study demonstrates the temporal engineering of a switchable MOF (DUT-8) by deliberately tuning its temporal response through variations in cobalt content. Advanced analytical methods, including in situ time-resolved techniques, were used to analyze the switching kinetics stimulated by vapor adsorption. The spatiotemporal response of crystal ensembles showed differences due to variations in induction time and cobalt content, reflecting changes in activation barriers.

Charting the Complete Thermodynamic Landscape of Gas Adsorption for a Responsive Metal-Organic Framework

Ruben Goeminne et al.

Summary: New nanoporous materials have the potential to change adsorption and separation processes, especially those with adaptive cavities that exhibit high selectivity and unique phenomena like negative gas adsorption. While the thermodynamic driving forces behind counterintuitive adsorption processes have been studied, some experimental observations remain puzzling, requiring a comprehensive analysis similar to conformational free energy landscapes used in protein studies. The complete thermodynamic landscape of gas adsorption on DUT-49 presented here offers unprecedented insights into adsorption dynamics and provides a framework for understanding challenging adsorbents.

Slacking of Gate Adsorption Behavior on Metal-Organic Frameworks under an External Force

Shotaro Hiraide et al.

Summary: This study discussed the influence of polymer binders on the adsorption behavior of flexible MOFs, revealing the phenomenon of gate adsorption slacking and analyzing its thermodynamic characteristics through molecular simulations. The results showed that controlling the external force applied to MOF particles is crucial for shaping pellets that meet the requirements of gate adsorption.
