Tracking the Role of Defect Types in Co3O4 Structural Evolution and Active Motifs during Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Rongrong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the importance of defect-induced reconstruction for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in Co3O4 catalysts. The results show that O and Co vacancies promote mismatched rates of *OH adsorption and deprotonation, leading to irreversible catalyst reconstruction. Furthermore, O and Co defects trigger highly OER-active bridge Co sites and Co defects exhibit the best OER activity under compressive lattice stress. This work highlights the potential of defect-dependent reconstruction for rational electrocatalyst design in energy-related applications.

Dual Integrating Oxygen and Sulphur on Surface of CoTe Nanorods Triggers Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The bottleneck of large-scale implementation of electrocatalytic water-splitting technology is the lack of inexpensive, efficient, and durable catalysts for accelerating the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction kinetics. This study reports the activation and stabilization of cobalt telluride (CoTe) nanoarrays for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) through dual integration of sulfur (S) doping and surface oxidization. The synthesized CoO@S-CoTe catalyst exhibits superior OER performance compared to commercial RuO2 and other reported telluride-based OER catalysts, with a low overpotential and long-term stability.

Fe3+-Preactivated Ni/Co-Based Antiperovskite Nitrides for Boosting Oxygen Evolution: Surface Tuning and Catalytic Mechanism

Jiaxi Zhang et al.

Summary: Ni/Co-based antiperovskite nitrides, with good electrical conductivity, are being explored as alternatives to Ir/Ru-based catalysts and metal-oxide-based materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, their intrinsic activities for OER are insufficient. In this study, a preactivation strategy of modifying antiperovskite nitrides with Fe3+ at the surface is demonstrated, resulting in significant enhancements in OER activity. This work provides a general approach for improving the OER activity of conductive nitride-based electrocatalysts.

Spin-Selective Coupling in Mott-Schottky Er2O3-Co Boosts Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction

Xuan Wang et al.

Summary: A Mott-Schottky catalyst consisting of Er2O3-Co particles implanted into carbon nanofibers (Er2O3-Co/CNF) is designed to enhance alkaline oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via spin-selective coupling. The optimized Er2O3-Co/CNF shows improved ORR performance compared to individual Co/CNF and Er2O3/CNF. The introduction of Er2O3 optimizes the electronic structure of Co through gradient orbital coupling, resulting in significantly enhanced ORR performance. This work provides new perspectives for the design of efficient ORR electrocatalysts by engineering spin-selective coupling induced by rare-earth oxides.

Ligand Modulation of Active Sites to Promote Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Wenzhong Huang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a feasible ligand modulation strategy to boost the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity of cobalt-iron oxyhydroxide ((Fe,Co)OOH). By reducing the orbital overlap between the Fe/Co 3d and O 2p, the adsorption to oxygen-containing intermediates is weakened, which facilitates the O-2 desorption. The ligand-modulated (Fe,Co)OOH exhibits excellent OER performance with low overpotentials and high durability.

CoOx electro-catalysts anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes for the oxygen evolution reaction

Santosh K. Singh et al.

Summary: The development of high-performance, low-cost transition metal oxide nanoparticle-supported carbon catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key challenge in commercializing water electrolyzers and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Cobalt oxides (CoOx) are being explored due to their availability and high activity in oxygen-related reactions, with effective anchoring between the metal oxide sites and conducting carbon support playing a crucial role in enhancing overall catalytic activity. Anchoring of catalytically active cobalt oxide nanoparticles on pristine carbon nanotubes, oxy-group functionalized CNTs, and nitrogen-doped CNTs not only holds the nanoparticles but also controls their size and distribution by creating nucleating sites during synthesis, leading to improved electrochemical OER activity.
