Tailoring the Void Space of a Silicon Anode for High-Capacity and Low-Expansion Lithium Storage

Hideyuki Nakano et al.

Summary: Si anodes have been attracting attention due to their abundant sources and high theoretical capacity. However, their large volume changes during charging and discharging have hindered practical applications. This study focuses on the structural design of Si anodes and develops a material that does not expand after the Li insertion process. The fabricated Si anode shows low-volume expansion and good cycling stability, opening up new possibilities for high-capacity energy storage devices.

Study on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of the Al-25Cr-5Si (at%) Alloy Powder Using Gas-Atomization and SPS Process

Yong-Ho Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, Al-25Cr-5Si alloy powder was prepared using gas atomization and densified via spark plasma sintering process. The alloy powder showed enhanced compressive strength and hardness compared to the mixed powder, and maintained its alloy phase even at high temperatures. The improvement in mechanical properties is attributed to the sintering process of AlCrSi, Al13Cr4Si4, and Al8Cr5 phases.

A numerical study of irregular eutectic in Al-Si alloys under a large undercooling

Xiaohui Ao et al.

Summary: The eutectic structure significantly affects the mechanical properties of Al-Si alloys. A comprehensive model was developed to predict the irregular eutectic structure of Al-Si alloys under large undercooling, with results indicating a synergistic effect between eutectic Al and Si to promote crystallization rate, a much higher solidification rate of eutectic compared to primary, and a change in morphology of eutectic Si from coarse lamellar structure to refined particles with increased eutectic undercooling.

Synthesis of porosity controllable nanoporous silicon with a self-coated nickel layer for lithium-ion batteries

Jae-Ik Hyun et al.

Summary: A scalable method was developed to synthesize nanoporous Si using Al-Si-Ni amorphous precursor alloys, with controlled pore and ligament sizes. The Ni-coated nanoporous Si showed high initial coulombic efficiency and high reversible capacity after 500 cycles, indicating its potential as a novel strategy for next-generation LIBs.

Suppression of thermal runaway by continuous heat generation using porous silicon covered with a thin oxide layer

Hideyuki Nakano et al.

Summary: The study found that the reaction between lithium in porous silicon and the electrolyte progressed from 200 degrees C or lower, consuming lithium to form Li2CO3 and LiOH with a mildly exothermic reaction, enhancing electrode safety. At temperatures above 200 degrees C, the formation of high entropy LiF by a reaction of PF5 derived from LiPF6 and lithium in the electrode suppressed the exothermic reaction in the high temperature range due to the small amount of LiF formation and its low crystallinity.
