A Generative Framework for Image-based Editing of Material Appearance using Perceptual Attributes

J. Delanoy et al.

Summary: This article presents an image-based editing method that modifies the material appearance of an object by changing high-level perceptual attributes. The method utilizes a two-step generative network to drive appearance changes and generate images with high-frequency details. To train the network, the researchers augmented an existing material appearance dataset with perceptual judgments of high-level attributes obtained through crowd-sourced experiments, and employed training strategies that avoided the need for original-edited image pairs. The perception of appearance in the edited images was validated through a user study.

TileGen: Tileable, Controllable Material Generation and Capture

Xilong Zhou et al.

Summary: Recent methods have limitations in generating material maps, such as the inability to constrain material generation to a specific category and the non-tileable nature of reconstructed materials. This paper introduces TileGen, a generative model that is specialized to material categories, always produces tileable material maps, and allows for conditional generation based on input structure patterns.

The joint role of geometry and illumination on material recognition

Manuel Lagunas et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors conducted a comprehensive and systematic analysis on how geometry, illumination, and spatial frequencies affect human performance on material recognition tasks. Through large-scale experiments, they found that deep neural networks can accurately classify materials, suggesting they may use similar high-level factors as humans in material recognition tasks.

Unsupervised learning predicts human perception and misperception of gloss

Katherine R. Storrs et al.

Summary: This study suggests that human gloss perception may emerge in an unsupervised fashion from learning to model statistical structure. The representations generated by unsupervised learning networks on renderings of glossy surfaces can better predict human gloss perception and explain illusions in gloss perception.

The effect of shape and illumination on material perception: model and applications

Ana Serrano et al.

Summary: The study collected a large-scale dataset of perceptual ratings to analyze the effects of illumination and geometry on material perception, and trained a deep learning architecture to predict perceptual attributes correlated with human judgments. The predictor demonstrates consistent and robust behavior in various challenging scenarios, enabling for the first time the estimation of perceived material attributes from general 2D images.

Analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) for 2-way layouts using a generalised ANOSIM statistic, with comparative notes on Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA)

Paul J. Somerfield et al.

Summary: ANOSIM is a robust non-parametric framework for comparing differences in resemblances among groups of samples. The generalised statistic R-O replaces the null hypothesis and describes resemblances among samples under an alternative model. The article discusses the use of the generalised statistic in various designs and provides examples of tests with ordered factors in marine ecological studies.
