Can a Computer Learn Nonlinear Chromatography?: Experimental Validation of Physics-Based Deep Neural Networks for the Simulation of Chromatographic Processes

Sai Gokul Subraveti et al.

Summary: This article discusses the capabilities of machine learning in accurately describing adsorption equilibria in the design of chromatographic processes. The PANACHE approach, a physics-based artificial neural network framework, is extended to simulate the dynamics of chromatographic columns without using adsorption isotherms. The results show that PANACHE models are successful in predicting the dynamics of binary solute mixtures in chromatographic columns even without knowledge of adsorption isotherms.

Process-informed adsorbent design guidelines for direct air capture

John Young et al.

Summary: Direct air capture using solid adsorbents is crucial for achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Current research mainly focuses on developing new adsorbents, but there is a disconnect between adsorbent design and process performance. This study demonstrates that while CO2 capacity is important for a steam-assisted TVSA process, it does not significantly impact the performance of an amine-functionalised adsorbent in a temperature vacuum swing adsorption process. Factors such as adsorption kinetics, density, and thermal conductivity play a more critical role in energy efficiency and cost reduction. The findings provide guidance for scientists and engineers in improving adsorbent design and intensified DAC processes.

A process-level perspective of the impact of molecular force fields on the computational screening of MOFs for carbon capture

Conor Cleeton et al.

Summary: The extent to which the ranking of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) for adsorption-based carbon capture and the selection of top performers identified in Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) process modelling depend on the choice of forcefields is investigated. CO2 and N-2 adsorption isotherms in 690 MOFs are generated using six typical forcefields, and a systematic uncertainty quantification study is conducted using PSA process-level modelling. The results show that the ranking of MOFs significantly depends on the choice of forcefield, with partial charge assignment being the main source of uncertainty.

How much can novel solid sorbents reduce the cost of post-combustion CO2 capture? A techno-economic investigation on the cost limits of pressure-vacuum swing adsorption

Sai Gokul Subraveti et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the cost limits of using PVSA cycles for post-combustion CO2 capture under the assumption of an ideal zero-cost adsorbent. Through integrated techno-economic optimization, the study determines the lowest possible cost of CO2 avoided for different industrial flue gas compositions and flow rates. The research shows that PVSA can be an attractive option for flue gas streams with high CO2 compositions, with ideal adsorbents demonstrating promise for future development and optimization.

Summary: A computationally faster and reliable physics-based artificial neural network framework (PANACHE) has been developed for adsorption and chromatography emulation. This approach accurately simulates adsorption processes by learning the underlying governing partial differential equations through a physics-constrained loss function, without requiring system-specific inputs. The results show that PANACHE significantly reduces computational time while maintaining similar accuracy to the detailed model simulations.

Efficient Bayesian Optimization of Industrial-Scale Pressure-Vacuum Swing Adsorption Processes for CO2 Capture

Adam Ward et al.

Summary: The design of adsorption systems for CO2/N-2 separation in carbon capture applications is challenging and requires multiobjective optimization. Traditional methods using NSGA-II are time-consuming, while a Bayesian optimization algorithm called TSEMO can provide the same solution with significantly less computational time. The use of TSEMO algorithm has led to the design of an efficient carbon capture system. However, when coupled with a data-driven machine learning framework, NSGA-II outperforms the Bayesian approach in terms of computational performance.
