Ammonia-oxidizing archaea possess a wide range of cellular ammonia affinities

Man-Young Jung et al.

Summary: This study characterized the ammonia oxidation kinetic properties of 12 AOA, finding that Nitrosocosmicus species have the lowest affinity for ammonia and total ammonium among all characterized AOA. The substrate affinity of ammonia oxidizers is correlated with their cell surface area to volume ratios, and ammonia-not ammonium-is the substrate for the ammonia monooxygenase enzyme of AOA and comammox, which is similar to AOB.

Review of Nitrification Monitoring and Control Strategies in Drinking Water System

Sharif Hossain et al.

Summary: Nitrification is a significant challenge in chloraminated drinking water systems, leading to the loss of disinfectant residual and adverse effects on water quality. Monitoring and controlling nitrification require microbiological tests or assessment of surrogate parameters. Strategies to manage nitrification include controlling factors that affect monochloramine decay and ammonium substrate availability, but these strategies may increase disinfection-by-products levels.

Opportunistic pathogens exhibit distinct growth dynamics in rainwater and tap water storage systems

Xiaodong Zhang et al.

Summary: The study compared the growth dynamics of bacterial opportunistic pathogens in rainwater and tap water storage systems, finding that bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Legionella thrived in rainwater, while amoebal hosts like Vermamoeba vermiformis proliferated in PVC tanks in both rainwater and tap water systems. Tank materials had a significant impact on the presence of target microorganisms, with species-specific responses observed in both bulk water and biofilm. Overall, the results highlighted the risks of opportunistic pathogen contamination in rainwater storage systems and provided insights for system design and operation to control these pathogens.

Abundance and niche specificity of different types of complete ammonia oxidizers (comammox) in salt marshes covered by different plants

Dan-Qi Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the abundance and community composition of comammox in salt marsh sediment samples covered by three types of plant species along the southern coastline of China using quantitative PCR and partial nested-PCR. The results showed a predominance of comammox clade A in the majority of the samples, indicating their ubiquity and important role in nitrification in salt marsh ecosystems. Redundancy analysis revealed a coexistence pattern of comammox Glade A.1 with ammonia-oxidizing archaea and comammox clade A.2 with canonical ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, suggesting differences in potential niche preference.

The Burn: water quality and microbiological impacts related to limited free chlorine disinfection periods in a chloramine system

Katherine Alfredo

Summary: The study found that a short free chlorine disinfection period had limited impact on nitrification within the distribution system, but could lead to increased iron concentrations, raising concerns about consumer water quality. Locations with consistently high chlorine residuals showed significant changes in bulk water microbial community, while microbial communities of the scoured biofilms remained similar throughout the study.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential industrial application of comammox in producing high-quality nitrate solution for hydroponic fertilizer. Comammox Nitrospira was found to be the main driver of stable and efficient ammonia oxidation in the system. Microbial co-occurrence analysis revealed strong positive correlations between Nitrospira and certain other OTUs, which may help stabilize Nitrospira abundance in the biofilm.
