Facile optimization of grafted chain length on antifouling properties based on hyperbranched polyglycerol

Yang He et al.

Summary: The surfaces of antifouling membranes are improved by tuning the chain lengths of hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) brushes, leading to enhanced wettability and reduced protein adsorption. The length of HPG chains plays a critical role in the permeability and anti-biofouling properties of the membranes. A medium-length HPG brush with a dense enough chain volume overlap (Dv) exhibits optimal biofouling resistance. The findings provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of grafted polymer brushes. Rating: 8/10.

Engineering a novel zwitterionic polyurethane nanofiltration membrane with enhanced fouling resistance for water reclamation

Fei Song et al.

Summary: Designing zwitterionic polymers and enhancing antifouling properties of membrane surfaces are important for water reclamation. In this study, a facile and scalable one-pot polymerization approach was proposed to synthesize a novel thiolated zwitterionic polyurethane (TZP) and graft it onto a polydopamine activated membrane surface for antifouling nanofiltration (NF) membranes. The TZP grafting neutralized the negative charge of the membrane surface, improved its hydrophilicity, and optimized the pore size and ion selectivity of the NF membranes. The TZP-30 membrane exhibited excellent fouling resistance and satisfactory flux recovery rate.

In-situ assembled amino-quinone network of nanofiltration membrane for simultaneously enhanced trace organic contaminants separation and antifouling properties

Jialin Song et al.

Summary: Nanofiltration has attracted extensive attention for surface water purification and wastewater reclamation. However, the poor removal of trace organic contaminants and membrane fouling limit its application. This study introduces a simple and scalable method for improving the performance of commercial nanofiltration membranes, using an amine-quinone networks (AQN) coating coordinated by 5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (HNQ) and polyethyleneimine (PEI). The modified membrane shows significant enhancement in the rejection of trace organic contaminants and excellent fouling resistance against proteins.
