Heavy metal pollution, ecological risk, spatial distribution, and source identification in sediments of the Lijiang River, China

He Xiao et al.

Summary: This study collected 61 sediment samples along the Lijiang River to analyze pollution levels and ecological risks. The results showed high concentrations of Cd, Hg, Zn, and Pb in the river sediments, with the midstream area being the most polluted and posing a higher potential ecological risk, primarily due to urbanization and agricultural activities.

The Niederschlag fluorite-(barite) deposit, Erzgebirge/Germany-a fluid inclusion and trace element study

Sebastian Haschke et al.

Summary: The Niederschlag fluorite-barite vein deposit in the Western Erzgebirge, Germany, has been actively mined since 2013. The study identified two different stages of fluorite mineralization with distinct characteristics. The fluid inclusions and REY systematics of the two stages of fluorite show significant differences in their properties and compositions.

Health risk assessment based on source identification of heavy metals: A case study of Beiyun River, China

Huihui Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, Beiyun River was used as an example to quantitatively identify pollution sources and assess pollution source-oriented health risks related to heavy metals. The results showed that heavy metal pollution in the midstream and downstream of Beiyun River is more serious, with arsenic and nickel posing serious health risks to local residents. Industrial activities were identified as the largest contributor to heavy metal pollution in Beiyun River. The findings provide important insights for the precise control of pollution sources to improve water environment management in the basin.

Vertical Zoning in Hydrothermal U-Ag-Bi-Co-Ni-As Systems: A Case Study from the Annaberg-Buchholz District, Erzgebirge (Germany)

Marie Guilcher et al.

Summary: The Annaberg-Buchholz district in Germany is a typical occurrence of hydrothermal five-element veins, with multiple mineralization stages recognized in polyphase veins. Uranium and five-element mineralization stages are found in the upper 400 meters below surface, coinciding with a specific lithology, while fluorite-barite-Pb-Zn mineralization occurs throughout the vertical profile of the district. The observed vertical zoning is attributed to hydrothermal remobilization rather than being a primary feature.

Source apportionment of heavy metals in sediments and soils in an interconnected river-soil system based on a composite fingerprint screening approach

Ruihui Chen et al.

Summary: Heavy metal pollution is a global concern due to urbanization and industrialization. This study accurately identifies sources of heavy metals using machine classification and screening methods, with results showing that printing and dyeing, chemical, electroplating, and metal processing are the main sources in the studied area.

Nickel industry: Heavy metal(loid)s contamination-sources, environmental impacts and recent advances on waste valorization

Georgios Bartzas et al.

Summary: The nickel industry is facing challenges due to the increasing demand for nickel in low-carbon technologies and battery production for electric vehicles. Improper handling of nickel production waste poses risks to the environment and public health. Exploration of alternative waste utilization methods is needed to reduce environmental impact.
