A case for associational resistance: Apparent support for the stress gradient hypothesis varies with study system

Amy E. Adams et al.

Summary: The stress gradient hypothesis (SGH) suggests that ecological interactions become more positive as environmental stress increases, with associational resistance being a key example. Our meta-analysis found strong support for the SGH in studies involving bacteria, plants, terrestrial ecosystems, negative interspecific interactions, adults, and survival under stress. However, cross-disciplinary communication barriers currently limit further exploration of the SGH, and future research should expand beyond interspecific plant competition and include multifactor stress.

Plant diversity enhances soil fungal network stability indirectly through the increase of soil carbon and fungal keystone taxa richness

Congcong Shen et al.

Summary: Plant diversity has a positive effect on the stability of belowground communities, leading to an increase in fungal diversity, network complexity, and stability. This effect is indirectly achieved through the increase in soil carbon and fungal keystone taxa richness. Both environmental filtering and biotic interaction processes play significant roles in mediating the plant diversity effect on soil fungal network stability. The plant diversity-induced fungal network stability is closely correlated with community-level functions.

Convergency and Stability Responses of Bacterial Communities to Salinization in Arid and Semiarid Areas: Implications for Global Climate Change in Lake Ecosystems

Yang Hu et al.

Summary: Climate change has led to salinization and nutrient enrichment in lake ecosystems, affecting bacterial communities. This study found that salinization has a greater impact on bacterial communities compared to nutrient enrichment. Salinization leads to convergent response of bacterial communities and alters interspecific interactions. The study also revealed the different patterns of topological parameters of bacterial communities in different salinity environments.

Ecological stability of microbial communities in Lake Donghu regulated by keystone taxa

Shengwei Liu et al.

Summary: This study used network analysis to investigate the seasonal stability of microbial communities in lake ecosystems. The results showed distinct differences in microbial networks among seasons, with the most complex network in autumn exhibiting the highest stability. Water temperature and pH were found to be significantly correlated with strong connecting structures among microbes, which impacted keystone taxa and destabilized microbial communities. Additionally, the presence of keystone taxa contributed to the stability of the networks, and their removal resulted in unstable networks. The specific composition of keystone taxa in different seasons was influenced by environmental filtering and interspecific interactions. These findings highlight the influence of seasonal variations in environmental factors on microbial networks and community stability.

Liquid Organic Fertilizer Amendment Alters Rhizosphere Microbial Community Structure and Co-occurrence Patterns and Improves Sunflower Yield Under Salinity-Alkalinity Stress

Haiyang Li et al.

Summary: The study found that liquid organic fertilizer treatment significantly improved the quality of saline-alkaline soil, increased sunflower yield, and promoted plant growth. By increasing soil nutrient concentrations, reducing soil pH and salinity, organic fertilizer treatment also enhanced fungal diversity and alleviated the effects of salinity-alkalinity stress on rhizosphere microbial communities.

Rare Taxa Drive the Response of Soil Fungal Guilds to Soil Salinization in the Taklamakan Desert

Litao Lin et al.

Summary: Salinization poses a great threat to soil fungal communities, and the rare taxa play a crucial role in mediating the impacts of salinization on the structure of the fungal community. The rare taxa of soil saprotrophic, symbiotrophic, and pathotrophic fungi are more sensitive to changes in soil salinity compared to the abundant taxa. The community composition of rare taxa of saprotrophic and pathotrophic fungi, but not symbiotrophic fungi, is positively associated with soil salinity change. The findings highlight the importance of considering rare taxa in predicting the responses of soil fungal communities to soil salinization.

Microbial Community Composition and Activity in Saline Soils of Coastal Agro-Ecosystems

Yang Dong et al.

Summary: Soil salinity has significant impacts on microbial community composition and metabolic activity. This study found that salinity drives a shift in bacterial community composition and reduces microbial activity. In severe-salinity soils, a diverse microbial community with a higher abundance of salt-tolerant species was observed. Addition of labile organic amendments can alleviate salt restrictions on microbial activity.

Halophytes increase rhizosphere microbial diversity, network complexity and function in inland saline ecosystem

Liping Qiu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diversity, composition, and co-occurrence networks of rhizosphere bacteria and fungi in six halophytes and bulk soils in a semiarid inland saline ecosystem. The results showed that the enhanced association between fungi and bacteria increased the complexity of microbial co-occurring networks in halophytic rhizosphere, contributing to higher microbial functions in this saline ecosystem.

Summary: This study revealed the impact of salinity-sodicity on bacterial diversity and community structure, showing that deterministic processes dominated bacterial assembly in high salinity-sodic soils. The bacterial co-occurrence network varied in complexity across different levels of salinity-sodicity, with soil pH playing a major role.

Environmental stress destabilizes microbial networks

Damian J. Hernandez et al.

Summary: Research shows that natural microbiomes under persistent stress exhibit characteristics of instability, with declines in microbial diversity and changes in network properties of stable communities. Pathogenic taxa decrease while oligotrophs and mutualists increase along stress gradients, impacting the negative:positive cohesion and potentially destabilizing microbiomes and their ecosystem services.

Anthropogenic activities destabilized riverine bacterial communities by increasing synchrony between taxa

Lemian Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that anthropogenic activities in the midstream and downstream areas of Xiyuan River increased the instability of bacterial communities, mainly due to the increased synchrony between taxa. Additionally, bacteria tolerant to anthropogenic activities and their linked taxa formed large and strong positive modules, further destabilizing the communities. These results provide new insights into how anthropogenic activities alter riverine microbial communities.

Low shifts in salinity determined assembly processes and network stability of microeukaryotic plankton communities in a subtropical urban reservoir

Yuanyuan Mo et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in salinity alters plankton community composition and decreases diversity. Salinity change influences community assembly through regulating the balance between deterministic and stochastic processes, with higher robustness of core plankton subnetworks at low-salinity levels and satellite subnetworks at medium-/high-salinity levels. The results suggest that even small increases in salinity at low levels can exert selective pressure on microeukaryotic plankton diversity and alter community assembly mechanisms and network stability.
