An exploratory human study of superstable homogeneous lipiodol-indocyanine green formulation for precise surgical navigation in liver cancer

Pan He et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel technology called super-stable homogeneous intermix formulating technology (SHIFT) to address the challenges of fluorescent surgical navigation after long-term embolization therapy. Through a retrospective study, it is found that SHIFT and indocyanine green (ICG) formulation have excellent tumor deposition effect and safety. During surgery, SHIFT and ICG can accurately identify tumor regions and boundaries, and improve variables associated with postoperative complications.

Monitoring Clinical-Pathological Grading of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Using MicroRNA-Guided Semiconducting Polymer Dots

Ze Zhang et al.

Summary: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a significant role in genetic processes and human biological behavior, as well as in tumor pathology. Designing miRNA-sensitive fluorescent nanoprobes is a challenging research field. These nanoprobes can be used to determine pathological grading by comparing palette combinations based on specific miRNA binding within cancerous cells.

An activated excretion-retarded tumor imaging strategy towards metabolic organs

Da-Yong Hou et al.

Summary: Intraoperative fluorescence-based tumor imaging is important for safe tumor resection and differentiation of tumor from normal tissues. However, the application of fluorescence contrast agents in renal cell carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma is limited. In this study, an activated excretion-retarded tumor imaging strategy was developed, which could be activated in situ with MMP-2 and self-assembled on the tumor cell surface, leading to extended tumor retention time and enhanced imaging signal.

Summary: In this study, a peptide called RS, derived from a previously reported HCC-targeting peptide P47, is shown to improve HCC micrometastasis discrimination and localization. RS also targets NSCLC and colon cancers and localizes to cell nucleoli, enabling targeted therapy. Conjugation of RS with chemotherapy drug OXA (RS-OXA) leads to significant tumor retardation with reduced systemic toxicity compared to OXA alone.

Summary: Gadolinium-based chelates are commonly used contrast agents for MRI, but their toxicity and potential retention in patients' bodies have raised safety concerns. Iron oxide nanoparticles have emerged as a promising alternative due to their non-toxic and biodegradable nature, but their development as T-1 contrast agents is complex and challenging. Progress is being made in exploring IONPs as safe and improved alternatives, but there are still many hurdles to overcome before they can be used clinically.
