The Recognition of Cultural Value as an Element for the Preservation of the 20th-Century Heritage: Application of the ICOMOS Multidisciplinary Approach to the ex SMOM of Pozzuoli

Summary: The actions for the preservation of cultural heritage must focus on the uniqueness and context relationships of the places. The ICOMOS methodology recognizes the identification of cultural value as a fundamental step for promoting 20th-century heritage. This paper analyzes the design process of applying the ICOMOS methodology for preserving the cultural value of a building complex in Pozzuoli from the early 1900s. Different elements of value and design choices are identified based on the different construction techniques and conservation state of the buildings.

However, the preservation of vernacular architecture faces challenges in the current globalized construction industry and the demand for modern comfortable dwellings.
