The contribution of fisheries and aquaculture to the global protein supply

Claude E. Boyd et al.

Summary: The contribution of aquatic animal protein to the global protein supply and the importance of aquaculture and capture fisheries in supplying this protein is relevant to the assessment and decision-making regarding future aquatic food production and its security. While aquaculture produces more aquatic animals, capture fisheries still provide a significant amount of crude protein. The production of capture fisheries has not increased in the past two decades, highlighting the need for aquaculture to meet the growing demand. The use of fishmeal and fish oil in aquaculture feeds needs to be reduced to reduce dependence on small wild fish and ensure food security.

Can Sustainable Development Save Mangroves?

Alexander Cesar Ferreira et al.

Summary: The Earth is facing issues such as global warming, overexploitation of ecosystems, species extinction, and pollution due to the increasing need for production, consumerism, and development. Although the concept of sustainable development has gained attention, forests, oceans, and wetlands, which are crucial ecosystems, are being destroyed at an alarming rate. This article discusses the incompatibility of true mangrove conservation with the concept of sustainable development and proposes solutions such as rejecting capital-oriented systems, reducing economic growth, transforming the energy matrix, and shifting to a lower level of the food chain.

Perspectives on the mangrove conundrum, land use, and benefits of yield intensification in farmed shrimp production: A review

Claude E. Boyd et al.

Summary: Shrimp farms globally occupy a large amount of land, but the majority of production comes from semi-intensive and intensive farming methods. Governments are taking measures to protect mangroves and restrict further expansion of shrimp farms. Increasing production pond yields can help freeze the direct land use for shrimp farms and reduce destruction of mangroves.

Stocks and losses of soil organic carbon from Chinese vegetated coastal habitats

Chuancheng Fu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that Chinese mangrove, salt marsh and seagrass habitats have relatively low OC stocks with burial rates, and the variability in soil OC stocks is linked to biogeographic factors but mostly impacted by sedimentary processes and anthropic activities. All habitats have experienced significant losses, resulting in estimated emissions of 94.2-395.4 Tg CO(2)e over the past 70 years. Conservation and restoration measures are seen as potential solutions to mitigate climate change and provide additional benefits.

Chemistry, biosynthesis and biological activity of terpenoids and meroterpenoids in bacteria and fungi isolated from different marine habitats

Mohsen Gozari et al.

Summary: The marine environment is rich in bioactive natural products, with marine microorganisms being important sources of compounds such as terpenoids. Marine sediments are the main habitat for terpenoid-producing microorganisms, which have anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

A preliminary survey of antibiotic residues in frozen shrimp from retail stores in the United States

Robert P. Davis et al.

Summary: The analysis of retail shrimp samples from grocery stores across 16 states in the United States showed no detectable antibiotic residues, contrary to previous findings in frozen shrimp which typically report low levels of antibiotic prevalence. Samples were obtained from major shrimp production countries including India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The Benefits of Combining Global and Local Data-A Showcase for Valuation and Mapping of Mangrove Climate Regulation and Food Provisioning Services within a Protected Area in Para, North Brazil

Robin Gutting et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new framework for quantifying and valuing mangrove ecosystem services, focusing on food provisioning and global climate regulation. By combining global databases with locally derived parameters, the study estimates that the mangrove area provides basic nutrition to about 1400 households, equivalent to $2.7 million, and contains 2.1 million Mg C in biomass, amounting to $50.9 million. High-resolution maps are provided to show valuable areas for management strategies.
