Co-Creation Beyond Humans: The Arts of Multispecies Placemaking

Cecilie Sachs Olsen

Summary: This article explores the potential of arts-based methods in developing a multispecies placemaking. By combining theories and practices from the evolving field of multi-species art with socially engaged art, it discusses the challenges of co-creation and participation from a multispecies perspective. The article concludes with a reflection on the possibilities of arts-based methods to foster methodological innovation and to rethink the essence of placemaking.

Guidelines for selecting an appropriate currency in biodiversity offset transactions

Helen J. Mayfield et al.

Summary: Selecting the appropriate currency for measuring losses and gains to biodiversity is crucial in biodiversity offset transactions. Benchmark-based condition scores provide a suitable currency for vegetation communities, but their application to individual species is often based on unproven assumptions. Species-specific currencies based on either species abundance or the suitability and amount of available habitat would better serve species.

Ecosystem coupling: A unifying framework to understand the functioning and recovery of ecosystems

Raul Ochoa-Hueso et al.

Summary: Global change can disrupt connections among species and between species and their environment before obvious impacts are detected. Developing a unified conceptual framework to predict early ecological impacts is crucial. The concept of coupling may provide this framework, and understanding the links between coupling and ecosystem functioning can accelerate the transition to planetary-scale sustainability.
