Effective screening of medium-assisted van der Waals interactions between embedded particles

Johannes Fiedler et al.

Summary: This article discusses the effect of an implicit medium on dispersive interactions of particle pairs and derives simple expressions for correction relative to vacuum. It is shown that a single point Gauss quadrature leads to the intuitive result that the vacuum van der Waals C-6-coefficient is screened by the permittivity squared of the environment evaluated near to the resonance frequencies of the interacting particles.

The Casimir Interaction between Spheres Immersed in Electrolytes

Renan O. Nunes et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the Casimir interaction between two dielectric spheres immersed in an electrolyte solution. Our results show that for very small spheres, contributions from monopole and dipole fluctuations provide the dominant Casimir energy. Additionally, the study also looked into the large sphere limit and the conditions for the validity of the proximity force approximation.

Tunable self-assembled Casimir microcavities and polaritons

Battulga Munkhbat et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method for stable microcavity formation based on self-assembly of gold nanoflake pairs in an aqueous solution, utilizing the equilibrium between attractive Casimir forces and repulsive electrostatic forces. The system allows for tunable optical microcavities with adjustable equilibrium configurations, enabling the realization of hybrid light-matter states. These Casimir microcavities could potentially be used in opto-mechanics, nanomachinery, and cavity-induced polaritonic chemistry.
