Neural Network Potentials: A Concise Overview of Methods

Emir Kocer et al.

Summary: Machine learning potentials have matured in the past two decades and are now widely used in large-scale atomistic simulations in chemistry, physics, and materials science. MLPs relying on artificial neural networks establish a mapping from atomic structure to potential energy, but important conceptual differences exist among MLPs, including system dimensionality, electrostatic interactions, global phenomena, and descriptor type used.

Dynamic aspects of graphene deformation and fracture from approximate density functional theory

Gang Seob Jung et al.

Summary: Graphene, as a two-dimensional carbon material, has attracted much attention due to its mechanical properties and failure mechanism. This study utilizes molecular dynamics simulations with density functional based tight binding to investigate the initiation of failure in pristine graphene. The findings suggest that a single threshold value for bond order or bond length is insufficient to determine the failure of pristine graphene, and instead, the collective behavior of local atomic groups plays a crucial role in fracture initiation.

Atomistic Mechanics of Torn Back Folded Edges of Triangular Voids in Monolayer WS2

Gyeong Hee Ryu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of triangular nanovoids in 2D materials on material properties, revealing the atomistic mechanics of folding in WS2 monolayers with statistical preferences under geometric conditions. It is found that loading directions and interlayer friction interact with WS2 lattice's crack preference, influencing the deformation and fracture pattern of the material.

Automated discovery of a robust interatomic potential for aluminum

Justin S. Smith et al.

Summary: An active learning approach is proposed to automatically construct general-purpose machine-learning potentials, improving the accuracy of ML models by driving non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and collecting QM data. The method is demonstrated in the case of aluminum, showing accurate predictions and agreement with reference DFT calculations.

Machine learning potentials for extended systems: a perspective

Joerg Behler et al.

Summary: In the past two and a half decades, machine learning potentials have evolved to become a broadly applicable tool for large-scale atomistic simulations, combining efficiency and accuracy. These models exploit the locality of atomic properties and can include long-range interactions, even for systems with non-local charge transfer. Challenges and limitations of current approaches are also discussed.

Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold

John Jumper et al.

Summary: Proteins are essential for life, and accurate prediction of their structures is a crucial research problem. Current experimental methods are time-consuming, highlighting the need for accurate computational approaches to address the gap in structural coverage. Despite recent progress, existing methods fall short of atomic accuracy in protein structure prediction.

Frank-van der Merwe growth in bilayer graphene

Haozhe Wang et al.

Summary: Bilayer graphene, with its fascinating electrical behavior, is often limited by the presence of thicker graphene islands, but the layer-by-layer growth mode with tuned interface adhesive energy can suppress multilayer impurities and result in mechanically robust bilayer graphene with AB stacking or small twisting angles.
