Neural Correlates of Letter and Semantic Fluency in Primary Progressive Aphasia

Marianna Riello et al.

Summary: Verbal fluency is an important cognitive task, and this study aimed to explore the neural and clinical correlates of verbal fluency in individuals with primary progressive aphasia (PPA). The results showed that letter fluency was associated with language severity and the volume of frontal and temporal areas, while semantic fluency was associated with dementia severity and the volume of temporal areas. Clinical severity was found to play a critical role in explaining verbal fluency performance in PPA.

Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of Verb Fluency Performance in Individuals With Probable Alzheimer's Disease and Healthy Older Adults

Eun Jin Paek et al.

Summary: The study examined the psycholinguistic and lexical characteristics of verb fluency responses in individuals with probable Alzheimer's disease (pAD) and healthy older adults. The results showed that individuals with pAD produced fewer correct verb fluency responses and generated little to no mental state verbs compared to the healthy group. The number of correct verb fluency responses was mainly predicted by reading comprehension score in the pAD group and nonverbal fluency test score in the healthy group.

Semantic Memory as an Early Cognitive Marker of Alzheimer's Disease: Role of Category and Phonological Verbal Fluency Tasks

Camillo Marra et al.

Summary: The assessment of semantic memory is crucial in predicting the progression of individuals with MCI to AD. The study revealed that MCI patients with lower SPD were more likely to progress to dementia, and SPD was the only measure with significant predictive effect at the five-year follow-up.

Serial Recall Order and Semantic Features of Category Fluency Words to Study Semantic Memory in Normal Ageing

Matteo De Marco et al.

Summary: The study introduced a new scoring procedure for measuring semantic memory in the Category Fluency Test, finding that older adults showed better semantic memory performance. Younger adults displayed more negative correlations between SRO and valence, while older adults had more optimized links between semantic memory and linguistic features.

Summary: Speech and language impairments in patients with PSP, CBS, and nfvPPA show similarities in cortical thickness reduction in bilateral frontal regions and striatal volume reduction. Multivariate analysis reveals associations between different speech and language domains and atrophy of specific brain regions.

Age-related similarities and differences in the components of semantic fluency: analyzing the originality and organization of retrieval from long-term memory

Dillon H. Murphy et al.

Summary: The study found that older adults and younger adults performed similarly in retrieval fluency and originality in long-term memory, but these abilities tended to decline with age, especially in older adulthood. Additionally, older adults tended to recall common items before unique ones, and there are both similarities and differences in semantic fluency between younger and older adults.
