First Isolation of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus faecium Carrying Plasmid-Borne vanD1

Junzo Hisatsune et al.

Summary: A vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium carrying the vanD1 gene was isolated from a fecal sample of a hospitalized patient in Japan. The strain showed moderate resistance to vancomycin but remained susceptible to teicoplanin. The plasmid pEF-D carrying the vanD1 gene had a similar backbone gene organization to pMG1 or pHT beta.

Selfish, promiscuous and sometimes useful: how mobile genetic elements drive horizontal gene transfer in microbial populations

Matthieu Haudiquet et al.

Summary: Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is a driving force in microbial adaptation, but it is controlled by mobile genetic elements (MGEs) whose interests may not align with those of their hosts. The interactions between cells and MGEs, as well as between MGEs themselves, result in complex evolutionary processes that affect gene flow and microbial adaptation.

Novel genomic islands and a new vanD-subtype in the first sporadic VanD-type vancomycin resistant enterococci in Norway

Mushtaq T. S. Al Rubaye et al.

Summary: This study characterized the genetic features of the first VanD-type VRE strains detected in Norway, revealing the presence of moderate to high vancomycin resistance in both E. faecium and E. casseliflavus strains. The identification of novel vanD subtypes and gene clusters provides insights into the origin and potential transferability of vancomycin resistance genes in enterococci.

Summary: Reducing antibiotic treatment duration by half did not lead to decreased abundance of antibiotic-resistance genes in the intestinal microbiomes of patients treated for gram-negative bacteraemia, nor did it improve microbiota species diversity.

Elucidation of host diversity of the VanD-carrying genomic islands in enterococci and anaerobes

Yusuke Hashimoto et al.

Summary: This study analyzed three VanD-type Enterococcus faecium strains isolated from a patient in Japan in 2017. The results showed variable vancomycin MICs among the isolates, with mutations identified in vanS(D) and ddl in the relatively resistant strain AA620. The genomic islands harboring the vanD gene cluster were found to be shared among different bacteria in the gut microbiota, indicating horizontal gene transfer.
