Evaluation of chemical composition, antioxidant, antibiofilm and antibacterial potency of essential oil extracted from gamma irradiated clove (Eugenia caryophyllata) buds

Hanady G. Nada et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that irradiating clove buds at 10 kGy with gamma rays can enhance the antioxidant, antibiofilm, and antibacterial activities of the extracted essential oils by increasing phenolic and flavonoid contents. The extracted oils showed improved resistance against multi-drug resistant bacteria and led to the release of intracellular substances and alterations in cell structure.

Development of sustainable food packaging material based on biodegradable polymer reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals

Marcio S. Andrade et al.

Summary: Conventional food packaging has caused significant damage to the environment, and finding alternatives to reduce plastic waste has become important. This study explored bionanocomposite films made of PBAT/PLA blend and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), which showed improved hydrophobicity and thermal stability compared to the blend film. Additionally, the mechanical properties of the bionanocomposite films were comparable to those of commercial plastic materials used in food packaging, making them a promising alternative for sustainable packaging materials.
