Impacts of land use and land cover changes on hydrological processes and sediment yield determined using the SWAT model

Edivaldo Afonso de Oliveira Serrao et al.

Summary: This study focused on the impacts of land use and land cover changes on hydro-sedimentological variables in the Brazilian Amazon. It found that sub-basins with pastureland had increased surface runoff and sediment yield, while sub-basins with forest land cover showed homogeneous and trendless time series. The study emphasized the importance of understanding these impacts in managing water and environmental resources.

Land use and land cover change dynamics and its impact on watershed hydrological parameters: the case of Awetu watershed, Ethiopia

Tamene Adugna Demissie

Summary: Land use land cover (LULC) is a significant driver of environmental change, impacting human life and the natural environment. This study analyzed the temporal and spatial changes in LULC over the past 20 years in the Awetu watershed, Ethiopia, and assessed its impact on hydrological responses using the SWAT model. The findings showed an increase in urban and agricultural areas at the expense of grassland and forest land, leading to increased surface runoff and sediment yield, and decreased evapotranspiration and groundwater.

Changes in Ecosystem Service Values in Response to the Planting of Eucalyptus and Acacia Species in the Gilgel Abay Watershed, Northwest Ethiopia

Ermias Debie et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of planting Acacia and Eucalyptus species on ecosystem service values in the Gilgel Abay watershed in northwest Ethiopia. It finds that the expansion of plantations has resulted in a decrease in overall ecosystem service values, with cultivated land replacing natural forests, shrubs, and grasslands. However, the planting of Acacia and Eucalyptus species has contributed to increased values in erosion control, climate regulation, and nutrient cycles.

Modeling the impacts of land use and land cover dynamics on hydrological processes of the Keleta watershed, Ethiopia

Daniel Bekele et al.

Summary: Inappropriate land use leading to hydrological changes can result in natural resource degradation impacting environmental welfare and sustainable development. This study in the Keleta watershed, Ethiopia found an increase in surface runoff and a decrease in groundwater flow, highlighting the importance of integrated landscape management to mitigate adverse impacts on ecosystems and water resources.
