Metabolism, absorption, and anti-cancer effects of sulforaphane: an update

Hao-feng Gu et al.

Summary: This article provides an overview of the role and mechanism of sulforaphane (SFN) in preventing cancer. SFN has high bioavailability and absorption, and inhibits cancer development through various pathways, including promoting autophagy, inducing epigenetic modifications, suppressing glycolysis and fat metabolism. Moreover, SFN has the ability to inhibit cancer stem cells and synergistic effects with other anti-cancer agents. Progress has also been made in clinical trials.

Terpenoids' anti-cancer effects: focus on autophagy

Chirine El-Baba et al.

Summary: Terpenoids, the largest class of natural products derived mainly from plants, exhibit diverse anti-tumor effects, including anti-proliferative, apoptotic, anti-angiogenic, and anti-metastatic activities. The complex relationship between apoptosis and autophagy in cancer cells is driven by a delicate balance of protein regulation, leading to different outcomes through interrelated signaling pathways. Further research on autophagy induction by terpenoids may provide insights for novel cancer therapies and more effective treatment regimens.

Green Tea and Its Relation to Human Gut Microbiome

Sergio Perez-Burillo et al.

Summary: Green tea can influence gut microbiota by either stimulating the growth of specific species or hindering the development of detrimental ones, benefiting health through beneficial bacteria or microbial bioactive metabolites. The inter-relation between green tea and gut microbiota is crucial for many health promoting effects of green tea, with the ability to correct microbial dysbiosis in conditions like obesity or cancer. Tea compounds influence the growth of bacterial species involved in inflammatory processes, potentially impacting the development of chronic diseases.

Functional roles of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in Alzheimer's disease: Implications of gut microbiota-targeted therapy

Si-Ran Zhong et al.

Summary: Scientific evidence shows that the gut microbiota plays a significant role in influencing physiological balance and contributing to diseases like Alzheimer's through the microbiota-gut-brain axis. The progression of Alzheimer's leads to changes in the gut microbiota and host co-metabolic relationship, causing dysbiosis and imbalance in microbial secretions and metabolites. Targeted therapies through the microbiota-gut-brain axis, such as dietary measures and probiotics, may offer new strategies in managing Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases.
