Estimating Child Mortality at the Sub-national Level in Papua New Guinea: Evidence From the Integrated Health and Demographic Surveillance System

Bang Nguyen Pham et al.

Summary: This study provides child mortality estimates at the sub-national level in Papua New Guinea (PNG) using new data from the integrated Health and Demographic Surveillance System (iHDSS). The results show variations in Under 5 Mortality Rate (U5MR), Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), and Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR) across different sites and estimation methods, with U5MR estimates being more reliable. The differences in child mortality estimates between provinces are associated with contextual factors.

A Review of Racial Disparities in Infant Mortality in the US

Caleb J. Jang et al.

Summary: Racial disparities persist in infant mortality rates in the United States, despite an overall decline. Factors such as racial discrimination, low income and education levels, poor residential environments, lack of medical insurance, and treatment at low-quality hospitals contribute to these disparities. Addressing social determinants of health is crucial in reducing these disparities.

Under-five mortality and associated factors in southeastern Ethiopia

Firaol Lemessa Kitila et al.

Summary: The study conducted in southeastern Ethiopia found a high prevalence of under-five mortality, with a significant number of deaths occurring in the early days of admission. Factors influencing child mortality included address, HIV status, severe acute malnutrition, hypovolemic shock, type I diabetes with DKA, and short length of hospital stay. Efforts to improve service quality are crucial in reducing mortality rates among admitted children.
