Dynamic scouring of multifunctional granular material enhances filtration performance in membrane bioreactor: Mechanism and modeling

Wenxiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of granular materials on membrane fouling and filtration performance in membrane bioreactors (MBRs), and proposes a dynamic scouring mechanism and a contribution quantification model. The results suggest that granular materials enhance filtration performance through dynamic scouring and adsorption behavior.

High-speed treatment of low strength domestic wastewater for irrigation water production in pilot-scale classical, moving bed and fixed bed hybrid MBRs

Banu Tuluk et al.

Summary: By comparing different types of membrane bioreactors, it was found that under conditions of low hydraulic retention time and high organic loadings, MB-MBR and FB-MBR have advantages in the removal of COD, TN, and TP, as well as lower power consumption. Especially, FB-MBR can produce high-quality irrigation water with lower power consumption under the same conditions.

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) scouring to mitigate membrane fouling: Performance, hydrodynamic mechanism and contribution quantification model

Wenxiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of AGS-MBR in mitigating membrane fouling and reveals the scouring mechanism of AGS on membrane fouling. The results show that AGS-MBR has a low fouling rate and higher removal of organics and nutrients compared to conventional MBR. The scouring effect of AGS contributes significantly (39.9%) to mitigate membrane fouling.

Yunge Liu et al.

Summary: This study assessed the efficacy of natural antimicrobial compounds in inhibiting biofilm formation by Listeria monocytogenes, finding that these compounds can reduce biofilm formation by suppressing the quorum sensing system rather than inhibiting flagella formation.

Mitigation of membrane biofouling in membrane bioreactor treating sewage by novel quorum quenching strain of Acinetobacter originating from a full-scale membrane bioreactor

Shamas Tabraiz et al.

Summary: The novel QQ strain Acinetobacter guillouiae ST01 showed high activity in reducing quorum sensing in a membrane bioreactor by decreasing AHL concentrations in the sludge and biofilm. It also significantly reduced polysaccharide and protein levels, leading to a decrease in fouling rates in the MBR. These results suggest that A. guillouiae ST01 is a promising candidate for biofouling control in wastewater treatment.

Decreased biofilm formation by planktonic cells of Listeria monocytogenes in the presence of sodium hypochlorite

Mohit Bansal et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that subinhibitory concentrations of NaOCl can reduce the ability of L. monocytogenes planktonic cells to form biofilms on polystyrene surfaces and induce morphological changes in the biofilm structure and attachment capabilities. Additionally, subinhibitory NaOCl also downregulates the expression of biofilm formation-related genes in L. monocytogenes.
