Born to be sustainable: How to combine strategic disruption, open innovation, and process digitization to create a sustainable business

Oihab Allal-Cherif et al.

Summary: Changing societal demands, climate change, and ecological transition push companies to adapt their practices and incorporate social and environmental concerns. However, certain businesses are inherently sustainable and excel in the current economy due to their founders, who are sustainable entrepreneurs that recognize opportunities in addressing social and environmental issues. This article examines the key components of such companies, including disruptive strategy, social product innovation, and digitalization of processes. An in-depth analysis of Patagonia, an iconic company, reveals the crucial managerial practices that form sustainable entrepreneurship, such as making radical choices divergent from common, supposedly more profitable practices, integrating long-term partnerships with suppliers, pursuing sustainable product innovation for simplicity, and engaging in environmental activism to promote widespread adoption.

SMES' reluctance to embrace corporate sustainability: The effect of stakeholder pressure on self-determination and the role of social proximity

Robin-Alexander Ernst et al.

Summary: This study suggests that stakeholders play a crucial role in influencing the motivation of SMEs regarding corporate sustainability. Compared to distant regulatory pressure, SMEs consider the demands of proximate stakeholders more important, and the latter can even have a negative impact on their motivation. The results also indicate that pressure from employees and the community can decrease the controlled motivation of SMEs towards sustainability, but ultimately lead to improved overall sustainability performance; in contrast, regulatory pressure has the opposite effect, reducing the sustainability performance of SMEs.
