Reflected near-infrared light versus bite-wing radiography for the detection of proximal caries: A multicenter prospective clinical study conducted in private practices

Zvi Metzger et al.

Summary: The study compared the effectiveness of near-infrared light reflection (NILR) and bitewing radiography (BWR) in detecting proximal caries. NILR was found to be more sensitive in detecting early enamel lesions compared to BWR, and comparable in detecting lesions involving the dentino-enamel junction (DEJ). Expert team showed higher accuracy in caries detection using both methods.

Automatic Microaneurysms Detection for Early Diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy Using Improved Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization

Usharani Bhimavarapu et al.

Summary: In this study, fuzzy logic techniques were incorporated into digital image processing for early detection of diabetic retinopathy (DR). The digital fundus images were segmented using particle swarm optimization, and probability-based clustering algorithms were compared with other fuzzy models. The proposed PSO algorithm achieved an accuracy of 99.9% in early detection of DR.

Dental Research Data Availability and Quality According to the FAIR Principles

S. E. Uribe et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the availability of open data in dental research and assess compliance with the FAIR principles. The findings showed that dental researchers rarely shared data and when they did, the quality was suboptimal. This hampers reproducibility in dental research and impedes the utilization of machine learning algorithms.

Cost-effectiveness of AI for caries detection: randomized trial

Falk Schwendicke et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of AI-supported detection of proximal caries and found that although AI support had higher sensitivity, it did not result in higher cost-effectiveness due to the more invasive treatment approaches. The cost-effectiveness of AI could be improved by supporting subsequent management in addition to caries detection.

Current state of dental informatics in the field of health information systems: a scoping review

Ballester Benoit et al.

Summary: Dental informatics has made significant progress in the field of health information systems, with studies focusing on standardized clinical coding systems, data capture, and reuse of patient care data. The research covers system design and development, data completeness, user interfaces, and technical solutions. However, there is limited research on clinical decision support systems that reuse electronic dental records (EDR), as well as on the working environment of dental practitioners and the educational value of health information systems in dentistry.

Artificial intelligence for caries detection: Randomized trial

Sarah Mertens et al.

Summary: The study found that artificial intelligence software can improve dentists' diagnostic accuracy for proximal caries, especially in increasing sensitivity for detecting enamel lesions, but may also increase decisions for invasive treatments. Differences in the effects of AI on individual dentists should be further explored, and guidance should be provided on therapy choices when detecting caries lesions with AI support.

Generalizability of Deep Learning Models for Caries Detection in Near-Infrared Light Transillumination Images

Agnes Holtkamp et al.

Summary: This study aimed to train deep convolutional neural networks to detect caries lesions on Near-Infrared Light Transillumination (NILT) imagery obtained either in vitro or in vivo and to assess the models' generalizability. The results showed that models trained and tested on in vivo data performed significantly better than those trained and tested on in vitro data. When tested in vitro, the models trained in vivo showed significantly lower accuracy, and similarly, when tested in vivo, models trained in vitro showed significantly lower accuracy.
