Thirty Years of GOSHIP and WOCE Data: Atlantic Overturning of Mass, Heat, and Freshwater Transport

V Cainzos et al.

Summary: The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is crucial for global climate by redistributing heat and freshwater. Despite dedicated observing systems established in the Atlantic since the 2000s, there is no consensus on whether the AMOC slowdown is occurring. Analyzing hydrographic data from the past 30 years, it was found that there have been no changes in the AMOC in the Atlantic, while an increased export of freshwater from the South Atlantic has been observed with an increase in upper salinity.

Sea-ice retreat suggests re-organization of water mass transformation in the Nordic and Barents Seas

Summary: Water mass transformation in the Nordic and Barents Seas, triggered by air-sea heat fluxes, is undergoing reorganization due to rapid warming and retreating ice cover in the region.

Natural variability has dominated Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation since 1900

Summary: This study shows that natural variability has been dominant in AMOC changes since 1900, and anthropogenic forcing is not yet reliably detectable through sea surface temperature data and climate model analysis.

The evolution of the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation since 1980

Laura C. Jackson et al.

Summary: The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) has a key role in the climate system, and its variability since 1980 has been analyzed. The AMOC has shown periods of both strengthening and weakening, with uncertain magnitudes of change. Different patterns of variability have been observed in the subpolar and subtropical regions of the North Atlantic. Research priorities include improving the monitoring of the AMOC, better representing processes in the North Atlantic, and distinguishing between anthropogenic weakening and internal variability.

The effects of historical ozone changes on Southern Ocean heat uptake and storage

Shouwei Li et al.

Summary: This passage explores the effects of atmospheric ozone concentrations on Southern Ocean heat uptake and storage over the past five decades. It finds that ozone changes significantly impact the Southern Hemisphere westerly winds and contribute to heat redistribution in the Southern Ocean. Heat budget analysis shows that changes in sensible heat flux, shortwave radiation flux, and sea ice formation and melt contribute to the historical heat uptake between 50 and 58 degrees S.

Horizontal circulation across density surfaces contributes substantially to the long-term mean northern Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

Rong Zhang et al.

Summary: The results suggest that the Arctic Ocean, rather than the Greenland Sea, is the northern terminus of the mean Atlantic Overturning Circulation; open-ocean deep convection, in either the Labrador or Greenland Seas, contributes minimally to the mean Atlantic Overturning Circulation, hence it would not necessarily be substantially weakened by a shutdown of open-ocean deep convection; horizontal circulation across sloping isopycnals contributes substantially (more than 40%) to the maximum mean northeastern subpolar Atlantic Overturning Circulation.

A 30-year reconstruction of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation shows no decline

Emma L. Worthington et al.

Summary: Research suggests that adequately capturing changes to the deep circulation is key to detecting any anthropogenic climate-change-related decline in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). By developing a higher-fidelity empirical model based on RAPID data, researchers can better understand the variability of AMOC.
