Calcium homeostasis and cancer: insights from endoplasmic reticulum-centered organelle communications

Shanliang Zheng et al.

Summary: Calcium ion (Ca2+) is a widely present and versatile signaling molecule that controls various cellular processes essential for cancer establishment. The dysregulation of Ca2+ homeostasis, particularly in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), has been considered as a major driving force in the initiation and progression of malignant diseases. This article discusses the ER-centered dysregulation of Ca2+ homeostasis in cancer, summarizes Ca2+-based anticancer therapeutics, and emphasizes the significance of further understanding the regulation of Ca2+ homeostasis in cancer.

Arrhythmias in Chronic Kidney Disease

Zaki Akhtar et al.

Summary: Arrhythmias can cause disability and premature death in the general population, and the risk is even higher in patients with renal failure. The complexity of the association between the cardiac and renal systems is partly due to common causality and the reciprocal relationship between renal dysfunction and arrhythmias. This review explores the challenges faced by cardiologists in treating arrhythmias in patients with renal failure and discusses the impact of the coexistence of renal dysfunction and cardiac arrhythmia on management.

The effect of low serum calcium level on the severity and mortality of Covid patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Effat Alemzadeh et al.

Summary: This study found a significant association between hypocalcemia and severity of disease, mortality, hospitalization days, and admission to the intensive care unit in COVID-19 patients. Additionally, low serum calcium levels were found to be directly related to increasing D-dimer levels and decreasing lymphocyte counts. Consideration of serum calcium levels in initial assessments is recommended for determining disease severity.

Low serum calcium is associated with higher long-term mortality in myocardial infarction patients from a population-based registry

Timo Schmitz et al.

Summary: Low serum calcium level is an independent predictor of adverse outcomes in the first 2500 days after an acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, this effect diminishes over time, with no significant differences observed between calcium quartiles in later observation periods.

Disorders of Calcium Metabolism: Hypocalcemia and Hypercalcemia

Mohammad Tinawi

Summary: Calcium plays a critical role in various body functions, and its metabolism is linked to magnesium and phosphate metabolism. Hormonal regulators, such as PTH, 1,25(OH)(2)D, and Ca+2, are crucial for maintaining calcium homeostasis through intestinal absorption, bone turnover, and renal reabsorption.
