Water quality monitoring with Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 satellites during the 2021 volcanic eruption in La Palma (Canary Islands)

Isabel Caballero et al.

Summary: In this study, high-resolution satellite imagery was used to monitor seawater quality during the 2021 volcanic eruption on La Palma Island. The study successfully characterized the evolution of the new lava delta and its impact on the marine environment. The results showed that the deposition of volcanic ash and material resulted in increased turbidity, but there was no significant increase in chlorophyll-a concentration and no observed algal blooms.

Wildlife is imperiled in peri-urban landscapes: threats to arboreal mammals

O. M. Chaves et al.

Summary: Urbanization and deforestation pose challenges to forest-living vertebrates, such as brown howler monkeys. This study investigated the threats faced by these monkeys in peri-urban regions of southern Brazil and found that electrocution, dog attacks, vehicle collisions, and human mistreatment were the major causes of death or injury. Adult individuals were the most affected, and state, interaction type, and age-sex class were the main predictors of mortality.

Agents of Forest Disturbance in the Argentine Dry Chaco

Teresa De Marzo et al.

Summary: This study attributes forest disturbances in the Argentine Dry Chaco based on Landsat image time series, revealing that partial clearing is the most widespread type of disturbance. Results show that partial clearing is becoming more prevalent over time, while fires are declining. Factors such as roads and fields are associated with the spatial patterns of disturbances.

Global analysis of the slope of forest land

Mikael Lundback et al.

Summary: Forests covering one-third of the world's total land area are crucial for carbon balance, biodiversity, water supply, and bio-based products. This study aimed to create a globally consistent dataset of forest land distribution and area within different slope classes using GIS analysis. The majority of forests were found to be on slopes less than 15 degrees, with significant portions also present on slopes ranging from 15 to over 30 degrees, offering valuable insights for global forest resource management.

Pseudo-Invariant Feature-Based Linear Regression Model (PIF-LRM): An Effective Normalization Method to Evaluate Urbanization Impacts on Land Surface Temperature Changes

Zhengwu Cai et al.

Summary: The study validated the utility of the pseudo-invariant feature-based linear regression model (PIF-LRM) in normalizing multi-temporal Landsat LST to highlight the impact of urbanization on temperature changes. PIF-LRM effectively removed the temporal variation of LST caused by climate factors and emphasized the impacts of urbanization caused land use and land cover changes. The normalized LST by PIF-LRM showed stronger correlations with the time series of normalized difference of vegetation index (NDVI).
