Path Planning of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in Windy Environments

Herath M. P. C. Jayaweera et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel UAV path-planning technique based on the artificial potential field (APF) for following ground moving targets (GMTs) in windy environments. The proposed technique enhances the UAV's sensitivity to wind speed and direction by introducing a modified attractive force. It does not require specific hardware and is suitable for all types of multirotor UAVs. The evaluation in various simulation scenarios demonstrates the superior performance of the proposed technique in handling wind disturbances, indicating its high suitability for real-world applications.

Automating Aircraft Scanning for Inspection or 3D Model Creation with a UAV and Optimal Path Planning

Yufeng Sun et al.

Summary: This paper presents a two-stage approach of automating aircraft scanning with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a RGB-D camera. In the first stage, the UAV scans the aircraft from a safe distance to quickly generate a coarse model. In the second stage, an optimal scanning path is computed to closely inspect the surface or generate a dense model. Experimental results showed that this approach is more efficient than manual scanning.

Comparing Object Recognition in Humans and Deep Convolutional Neural Networks-An Eye Tracking Study

Leonard Elia van Dyck et al.

Summary: Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and the ventral visual pathway exhibit vast architectural and functional similarities in object recognition tasks. However, differences in spatial priorities of information processing are not fully taken into account in comparisons between the two systems. This study compares human observers and three forward DCNNs, revealing fundamentally different resolutions in terms of behavior and activation. It also provides evidence that a DCNN with biologically plausible receptive field sizes shows higher agreement with human viewing behavior.

Simulation and Characterization of Wind Impacts on sUAS Flight Performance for Crash Scene Reconstruction

Tianxing Chu et al.

Summary: This study uses sUAS flight simulation software to analyze the impact of wind speed, direction, and turbulence on drone flight, finding that optimal performance can be achieved when wind speed is below 11m/s and turbulence levels are light to moderate. Major lessons for real-world quadcopter sUAS flight design in windy conditions for crash scene mapping are also documented.
