High prevalence of mgrB-mediated colistin resistance among carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae is associated with biofilm formation, and can be overcome by colistin-EDTA combination therapy

Aye Mya Sithu Shein et al.

Summary: The global prevalence of colistin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (ColRkp) with chromosomal and plasmid-mediated LPS alterations has increased steadily. Our study demonstrated the extensively and pandrug-resistant characteristics of ColRkp among carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (CRkp). We discovered significant associations between extensively drug-resistant bacteria (XDR) and pandrug-resistant bacteria (PDR) ColRkp.

Global Prevalence of Colistin Resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae from Bloodstream Infection: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Leonard Ighodalo Uzairue et al.

Summary: This study found a low prevalence of colistin resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from global bloodstream infections, but significant resistance was observed in isolates collected from 2020 onwards. Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from the ICU showed higher colistin resistance compared to those from non-ICUs.

Investigation of Antibiotic Resistance and Biofilm Formation in Clinical Isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae

Kiana Karimi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the antibiotic resistance pattern and biofilm formation in K. pneumoniae strains isolated from two major hospitals in Hamadan, West of Iran. The results showed a strong correlation between biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance, emphasizing the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment of infections caused by K. pneumoniae. High-level resistance to cefotaxime was detected in 92% of isolates, while all isolates were susceptible to colistin.

Detection and characterization of Enterobacteriaceae family members carried by commensal Rattus norvegicus from Tehran, Iran

Taher Azimi et al.

Summary: Wild rats are known to carry various microorganisms and are considered a reservoir of zoonotic pathogens. In this study, urban rats from Tehran were collected and analyzed for Gram-negative bacteria, antibiotic resistance, and pathogenic E. coli. The findings suggest that rodents could be a potential source of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens, highlighting the importance of rodent control and surveillance programs for urban health.

Correlation between antimicrobial resistance and biofilm formation capability among Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from hospitalized patients in Iran

Shadi Shadkam et al.

Summary: The study investigated the correlation between antimicrobial resistance and biofilm formation capability among K. pneumoniae strains isolated from hospitalized patients in Iran. Most isolates showed resistance to antibiotics, with a significant proportion being multidrug-resistant or extensively drug-resistant. Biofilm-forming strains exhibited higher antimicrobial resistance compared to non-biofilm formers.

Novel colistin-EDTA combination for successful eradication of colistin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae catheter-related biofilm infections

Aye Mya Sithu Shein et al.

Summary: The combination of colistin (0.25-1 µg/ml) with EDTA (12 mg/ml) significantly reversed colistin resistance in both planktonic and mature biofilms of colistin-resistant K. pneumoniae. This novel colistin-EDTA combination showed potent efficacy in eradicating colistin-resistant K. pneumoniae catheter-related biofilm infections, eliminating the risk of recurrence in vivo, and reducing bacterial load in internal organs.

High-Level Aminoglycoside Resistance in Human Clinical Klebsiella pneumoniae Complex Isolates and Characteristics of armA-Carrying IncHI5 Plasmids

Xueya Zhang et al.

Summary: This study identified high levels of aminoglycoside resistance among Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from a teaching hospital in China, with rmtB being the predominant resistance gene. Additionally, a Klebsiella variicola strain carrying the armA gene exhibited high-level resistance to all aminoglycosides tested. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that the resistance genes were located on a conjugative plasmid belonging to type IncHI5, emphasizing the need for monitoring and restricting the dissemination of these resistance genes.
