Optimal traffic operation for maximum energy efficiency in signal-free urban networks: A macroscopic analytical approach

Mahyar Amirgholy et al.

Summary: The integration of artificial intelligence and wireless communication technologies enables the coordination of CAV platoons at signal-free intersections. This research focuses on enhancing energy efficiency by optimizing macroscopic traffic variables in these networks. The analytical model developed in this study provides insights into the relationship between energy loss and vehicular density in signal-free networks.

Random capacity for a single lane with mixed autonomous and human-driven vehicles: Bounds, mean gaps and probability distributions

Shukai Chen et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the random capacity of a single lane in mixed traffic flow with autonomous vehicles (AVs) and human-driven vehicles (HVs). It revisits the bound estimation of random lane capacity and investigates the significant gap between widely-used approximate mean capacity functions and their generalized function. Improper use of these functions in AV-HV traffic assignment and road network planning can lead to biased and misleading decisions. Simulation and distribution fitting techniques are used to explore the probability distribution of random lane capacity, identifying six suitable distributions including Log-Pearson 3, Log-Gamma, and Lognormal distributions.

Autonomous vehicles in mixed motorway traffic: capacity utilisation, impact and policy implications

Andrea Papu Carrone et al.

Summary: The introduction of autonomous vehicles in the future will reshape the transportation system, with potential benefits in terms of travel time reduction and increased throughput. However, the coexistence of autonomous vehicles and regular vehicles on the same road may lead to a significant decrease in road capacity utilization. Strategic planning involving dedicated lanes for autonomous vehicles appears to be the preferred solution to harness the positive impacts of autonomous vehicles and enhance overall consumer surplus.

The cooperative sorting strategy for connected and automated vehicle platoons

Jiaming Wu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a cooperative vehicle sorting strategy to optimally sort CAV platoons, utilizing A* algorithm, integer linear programming, and DSA* algorithm to improve algorithm running time. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, with further optimization performance improvement by increasing processes in the distributed computing system.

Competitive and cooperative behaviour analysis of connected and autonomous vehicles across unsignalised intersections: A game-theoretic approach

Hua Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates navigation strategies of two cross-moving connected and autonomous vehicles at an unsignalized intersection. Non-cooperative and cooperative game models are formulated, with results showing characteristics of pure-strategy Nash equilibria and the necessity for the optimal solution to the cooperative game to be in the NE solution set. The findings provide managerial insights for CAV operators and transport authorities, and propose an efficient algorithm for solving the models.

Automated vehicle-involved traffic flow studies: A survey of assumptions, models, speculations, and perspectives

Haiyang Yu et al.

Summary: Automated vehicles are seen as crucial in improving road safety, saving energy consumption, reducing vehicle emissions, increasing road capacity, and stabilizing traffic in future transportation systems. Numerous studies have been conducted to understand and model AV-involved traffic flow, with significant progress already made. This survey reviews existing AV-involved traffic flow models, examines the relationship among AV-based driving strategies, transportation system management, and resulting traffic dynamics, and provides insights for future research directions.
