Jayanta Layek et al.

Summary: Organic farming is a promising solution for mitigating environmental burdens. An integrated organic farming system model was developed and disseminated in three organic villages in India, which improved farmers' income and livelihood. The model increased crop yields and reduced dependence on external farm inputs.

Soil carbon stocks and main nutrients under cocoa plantations of different ages

Alfred Arthur et al.

Summary: Soil organic carbon and main nutrient stocks play important roles in maintaining soil fertility and crop yields. The study examined the changes in soil properties and nutrient availability under different ages of cocoa plantations. The results showed that nutrient levels varied with age, and certain nutrients were lower or higher than the critical levels for good cocoa growth.

Review of application of EPIC crop growth model

Zhiqiang Wang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the application of the EPIC crop growth model, which is used to study the impact of climate change on agriculture. The research focuses on improving the model's accuracy, studying the effects of climate change, and mitigating agricultural drought risk. The accuracy of the model is greatly improved by determining genetic parameters and modifying them according to weather and other conditions. Various meteorological factors, such as temperature and precipitation, are analyzed to understand their influence on crop growth under future climate change. The EPIC model has also been used to reduce the risk of agricultural drought.

What is 'conventional' agriculture?

James Sumberg et al.

Summary: This paper critically examines the framing of 'alternative' versus 'conventional' agriculture and argues that the use of the term conventional agriculture is a strategy of homogenization, normalization, and othering. The paper suggests that focusing on the contributions of different farming systems to the sustainability of agriculture is a more productive approach.

Evidence for the impacts of agroforestry on ecosystem services and human well-being in high-income countries: a systematic map

Sarah E. Castle et al.

Summary: Agroforestry integrates trees with crops and/or livestock to address environmental and socio-economic objectives. Existing research suggests that agroforestry can prevent environmental degradation, improve agricultural productivity, increase carbon sequestration, and support human welfare. However, the extent of literature supporting or refuting these claims has not been well-documented.

Improvements in soil health and soil carbon sequestration by an agroforestry for food production system

William C. Eddy et al.

Summary: Woody perennial cropping systems have the potential to improve soil health and increase soil carbon sequestration compared to annual cropping systems. A study in Iowa, USA, found that a Chinese chestnut - pawpaw agroforestry system showed significant improvements in biogeochemical metrics of soil health compared to a corn - soybean rotation system. However, the effects of tree density and diversity on soil health were limited.

Timber growth, cacao yields, and financial revenues in a long-term experiment of cacao agroforestry systems in northern Honduras

Oscar Ramirez-Argueta et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of shade tree management on cocoa yield and disease incidence in cocoa plantations in Honduras. The results showed that high tree density and shade cover negatively affected cocoa yield, but had no significant effect on disease incidence. Timber-based cocoa plantations proved to be a promising alternative for farm diversification in northern Honduras.

Influences of climate variability on cocoa health and productivity in agroforestry systems in Ghana

Bismark Kwesi Asitoakor et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of varying climate conditions on the health and productivity of cocoa trees in different regions of Ghana. It found that cocoa trees in areas with higher rainfall and lower temperatures had better health and higher yields compared to those in areas with lower rainfall and higher temperatures. Additionally, farm management practices were identified as a key factor affecting cocoa performance and the occurrence of pests and diseases.

Summary: This research explores the possibility of modifying the X8 Skywalker from a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle into a convertiplane. Computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel experiments were conducted to analyze the performance of different wing configurations. The results indicate that the proposed modifications can generate enough lift despite reducing the wing area, with the filleted hole configuration demonstrating less drag and turbulence effects at low angles of attack.

Improving soil health and closing the yield gap of cocoa production in Ghana - A review

Betty Amponsah-Doku et al.

Summary: Ghana, the second largest producer of cocoa, relies on cocoa farming for the livelihoods of 25-30% of its population. However, the average yield of cocoa farms is only about 30% of the potential yield. Urgent strategies are needed to maintain and restore the productivity of existing farms and close the yield gap. Recent advances in sustainable agroforestry cocoa farms and site-specific fertilizer recommendations offer promising opportunities to improve soil health and increase cocoa production.

Arthropod diversity of cocoa farms under two management systems in the Eastern and Central regions of Ghana

Geoffrey Akesse-Ransford et al.

Summary: The diversity of insect communities can be used as a bioindicator for environmental change, especially in farms under different management systems. A study in Ghana found that insect abundance and diversity were generally higher in organic cocoa farms compared to conventional cocoa farms, with Oecophylla longinoda being the dominant species. While most recorded insect species were cocoa pests, there was also a high abundance of beneficial insects in cocoa farms. The study suggests that cocoa farms have the potential to conserve insect biodiversity.

Summary: The study in Ghana showed that organic cocoa agroforestry systems have a greater potential to accumulate carbon and benefit from carbon schemes compared to conventional systems. Organic farms had higher shade tree diversity, indicating the willingness of organic farmers to maintain/plant trees. Organic cocoa agroforestry systems can help retain important ecosystem services within cocoa production areas while providing additional income to smallholder farmers.

Exploring the Gender-Specific Adaptive Responses to Climate Variability: Application of Grazing Game in the Semi-Arid Region of Ghana

Michael Mensah et al.

Summary: The study in the semiarid region of Ghana found that male-headed households tended to migrate south for work during the dry season as an adaptation strategy, while female-headed households engaged in off-farm activities such as shea-butter production and basketry. Females were more environmentally conscious and create fewer desert patches compared to males, who prioritized short-term benefits from the sale of cattle. Both gender groups employed strategies such as reducing the number of cattle during feed scarcity and family support from income generated by livestock sales. Female involvement in decision-making is crucial for improved natural resource management.

Summary: This study found that only a small percentage of farmers use pure organic-based ISFM, while the majority use a combination of organic and inorganic practices. Factors such as access to ISFM information, education level, and age of farmers significantly influence the use of organic-based ISFM. Additionally, ecological factors such as location of cocoa agroforests and intercropping practices also play a role in determining the level of organic-based ISFM used by farmers.
