Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet among Children and Youth in the Mediterranean Region in Croatia: A Comparative Study

Antonela Matana et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) in children and youth in the Mediterranean region of Croatia and examine the differences in adherence among different educational stages. The results showed low adherence to the MD in the study population, particularly among college students. Breakfast consumption and its relationship with diet quality and adherence to Mediterranean diet in European adolescents: the HELENA study

Natalia Gimenez-Legarre et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the associations between breakfast consumption and adherence to diet quality index (DQI) and Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) in European adolescents. The results showed that breakfast consumers had better dietary quality scores compared to those who usually skipped breakfast. Thus, promoting regular breakfast consumption in adolescents may be an effective strategy to improve overall diet quality.

Nutrition Education Program and Physical Activity Improve the Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet: Impact on Inflammatory Biomarker Levels in Healthy Adolescents From the DIMENU Longitudinal Study

Catia Morelli et al.

Summary: Our study found that nutrition education program (NEP) and high-intensity physical activity levels independently influenced adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) in adolescents. Promoting a healthy lifestyle, including nutrition education interventions or physical activity, can improve MD adherence and impact inflammatory status in adolescence, serving as a strategy for preventing chronic non-communicable diseases throughout the lifespan.

The Impact of Nutritional and Lifestyle Changes on Body Weight, Body Composition and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in Children and Adolescents during the Pandemic of COVID-19: A Systematic Review

Kalliopi Karatzi et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic and related measures have negatively impacted the diets and lifestyles of children and adolescents globally, leading to increased body weight, central fat accumulation, and elevated cardiometabolic risk factors. While parental presence and control have shown benefits for children with Type 1 diabetes, the effects on children with Type 2 diabetes are still debated. Changes in diet and lifestyle have varied effects on the prevalence of hypertension in children. These findings highlight the importance of public policy measures to prevent obesity and improve diet and lifestyle during the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic.

Food Waste and Nutrition Quality in the Context of Public Health: A Scoping Review

Aoife Brennan et al.

Summary: Food waste and nutrition are closely linked in terms of environmental and public health, with interventions to reduce food waste playing a key role in improving food sustainability and nutrition quality. However, current food redistribution systems do not adequately address access to sustainably sourced and nutrient-dense foods for lower-income communities. Opportunities for future research and practice lie in aligning food waste, plastic waste, and nutrition priorities to develop more effective food redistribution systems that minimize wastage of high-quality foods.
