A Comparative Loading and Release Study of Vancomycin from a Green Mesoporous Silica

Georgiana Dolete et al.

Summary: Mesoporous silica has been widely used as an efficient drug delivery system due to its porous structure. In this study, a novel synthesis method using Tween-20 and starch as templates for mesoporous silica synthesis was developed. The physicochemical features of the obtained material were analyzed, and vancomycin was loaded onto the material using three different approaches. The release rate and drug adsorption depth varied depending on the loading method.

Tin-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles: Antineoplastic properties and genotoxicity assessment

Pallavi C. Choudante et al.

Summary: Nanotechnology has advanced cancer diagnostics and treatment by using mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) as carriers for drugs or therapeutic agents. Conjugation of organotin compounds to MSNs induces cytotoxicity and apoptosis in cancer cells, while also exhibiting anti-angiogenic properties. These findings suggest that tin-conjugated MSNs have potential for anticancer therapy.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Summary: Nano-sized materials, specifically mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) functionalized with therapeutic agents, image agent, and targeting molecule, show high potential in anticancer therapy. The study reveals that Sn-based materials are more active than Ti-based systems, but Ti-based materials exhibit better cellular uptake. Furthermore, Sn-based MSNs can modulate cell factors and demonstrate anti-angiogenic effects, possibly due to interaction with transferrin.
