Katharine Costa dos Santos et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the therapeutic and residual efficacy of fluralaner for treating tungiasis in dogs. The results showed that a single oral administration of fluralaner is effective in treating and achieving long-lasting prevention for tungiasis in dogs.

Tungiasis in domestic, wild, and synanthropic animals in Brazil

Tatiani Vitor Harvey et al.

Summary: Tungiasis is a parasitic skin disease caused by fleas of the genus Tunga, with dogs, cats, pigs, and synanthropic rodents as the main animal reservoirs. In Brazil, Tunga penetrans is the most common species, predominantly affecting humans and pet dogs, leading to serious consequences. Poor management and hygiene habits contribute to disease spread, while strategies based on the concept of One Health can offer more effective control of tungiasis.

Clinical and macroscopic morphological features of canine tungiasis

Tatiani Vitor Harvey et al.

Summary: Tungiasis is a public health issue in resource-poor communities, where dogs serve as important reservoirs of Tunga spp. and play a significant role in the transmission of this zoonosis. Through investigation on 40 infested dogs, it was found that lesions were most commonly located on the paw pads and younger dogs had a higher number of lesions.

Clinical implications and treatment options of tungiasis in domestic animals

Francis Mutebi et al.

Summary: Tunga penetrans, Tunga trimamillata and Tunga hexalobulata are the three species of sand fleas that cause tungiasis in domestic animals. Animals frequently suffer from high infection intensities, leading to significant morbidity, exacerbating conditions that are potentially fatal. Attention is mostly placed on human tungiasis, with animal tungiasis being neglected despite its public and animal health significance.
